Yeah, I knew stuff could happen in surgery, but I thought it was mostly nicked arteries, cutting too deep, the occasional sponge or clamp left behind - errors of the human surgeons who may or may not have slept in the last 36 hours. I didn't realize the body could have an adverse reaction to surgery, although put like that it doesn't surprise me.
