and everything in-between
Yesterday bro and I went to NY Comic Con. Snapped a few pics but I was pretty overwhelmed by how *large* it had grown since the first year and didn't use the camera as much as I'd initially planned. Space wasn't an issue this year - they moved everything to the main floor of Javitz and kept the gaming and artists upstairs - but the line to get in at 4:00 was ginormous. I know George R.R. Martin mentioned heading over to the show in his LJ so I kept an eye out for him but no luck. I *did*, however, get to see Gene Ha, the artist for Alan Moore's Top Ten series. I held off on purchasing artwork or comics (I'm more into waiting for the trade than spending money on each issue - I fell off the collecting bandwagon years ago - and Amazon is so much cheaper when it comes to buying trades) but I did pick up the strategy game Marvel Heroes. Can't wait to sit in on Monday with a cup of tea and make my way through it with the bro-unit.
Have I mentioned how effin' big this thing was? Absolutely amazing. I was happy to be able to walk around with few congestion issues. I'll miss all the goodies today because of work, but next year I'll definitely plan on getting a weekend pass and take the three days off so I can absorb everything.
After the Con we grabbed dinner then went over to Carolines on Broadway, where we sat in for the comic stylings of Donnell Rawlings, aka "Ashy Larry" of Chappelle Show fame (he's also the host of a morning show here in NYC on Power 105). The two opening acts and Rawlings were HI-larious. AND we were right up on the stage - our table butted up to the stage and I ended up sitting with my foot up on the edge for comfort -so the first comic decided to use me and my bro in her act. Fun.

1. what do you like least about your career/job?
At the moment? Being thought less of by certain people for entering the profession. Being a nurse and being intelligent are not mutually exclusive. Hells, I'd think one would like to believe the individual monitoring your vitals and giving you your medication has an ounce of common sense, right? So why do I get the "oh, really? too bad" look when I tell people I'm a nurse...followed closely by "well, why didn't you want to be a doctor?" *sigh*
2. if you had to live in a past time period, which would it be?
If I *had* to...because, if given a choice I'm too far a clean freak to have wanted to cohabit in any age but this one...I'd say some time in Italy during the mid 1700s. Mainly for the music.
3. what do you think is your best accomplishment so far?
Finishing undergrad. The first one, at Brown. I was so down in the emotional hole just prior to the end of my senior year that I was very close to doing something completely idiotic and unchangable. Luckily I got a second wind and, well, there was no where to go but up. A very close second would be doing the nursing school thing and getting a job. I'm still stoked about that one.
4. if you could have dinner with one historical figure, who would it be and why?
Okay, on a purely shallow note I'd have to dine with Catherine the Great and ask her what went on between her and her horse. That shit's been stuck in my head since, like, sophomore year of HS.
5. if offered the chance, would you go to outer space or help terraform another planet? why or why not?
You mean "and help terraform another planet"...? I would, but not on the First Wave. I don't have an adventurous spirit. I'm instead moved to help those around me with the here-and-now, so being given the chance to stick a flag and set up shop wouldn't appeal to me. Now, when the First Wave inevitably will require medical help (after making sure everything's safe and there aren't any, say, alien hives, waiting for a hapless nurse to stumble across it) I'd be more than willing to lend my services.

1) Who are your favorite comic book characters?
Storm's number one. A black woman (with long-ass straight hair and blue eyes, but I'll take what I can get) who's a bonafide leader. The first comics I read were Uncanny X-Men post-new team (aka Nightcrawler, Wolvie, Colossus, Storm, Kitty Pride) and Storm was just teh shit, for real. Even when she gets thrown into bullshit situations (her "marriage" to Black Panther last Black History Month comes to mind...Marvel, what the hellz was you thinking?) I still root for my girl. Number Two: Flash, version Wally West. Wisecracking speedsters do it for me. Another one is Matthew the Raven from Gaiman's Sandman series. I like how Gaiman kept his history ambiguous and how he ended up wearing his heart on his sleeve (or wing feathers) during the events of "The Wake".
2) If you could have one super power, what would it be?
There was a character in the Marvel Universe called Cypher, and he was a master of languages. Yup, that's the one. It would allow me to expand my travel horizons tremendously and learn tons about other peoples and cultures. And "Speaks all known languages" would look hella good on a resume.
3) Have you ever been out of the country? If so, where
I've been to Trinidad twice, both times on family business. Aside from going to Caracas Beach I've never been there as a tourist, and that irks. I also went to Italy on my HS senior trip. I got to visit parts of Florence, Pisa, Rome, Siena, Bologna, and a couple of other smallish towns. Next time I go I'm going to have to head over to Venice.
4) What makes you nostalgic for your childhood?
Every time I get reminded of my adult obligations. Having to pay bills really makes me wish I was, like, ten again and only concerned about being able to get a dollar from the folks for when the Mister Softee truck would make its rounds. Checking out my comic books and my stack of fantasy books makes me flash back to late nights spent under covers in my room reading until I couldn't force my eyes open anymore. I have this small box of Dragonlance that takes me back a decade in a heartbeat.
5) What books have you read recently?
It wasn't until I saw this question that I realized I hadn't finished a book since the year started. I've started "I Am Legend" by Matheson and "Perfume" by Suskind along with "The Golden Compass" by Pullman, but I haven't made it more than 150 pages through any of them. Gah. I really need to read more novels.
