A poll

[Poll #1151361]

Supposedly dark chocolate is the most popular type in the US. Why?? It's horrible, dammit.

ETA: A sample of Sexual Chocolate, for those who may not be familiar.

I actually don't like chocolate by itself at all. It has to have peanut butter or caramel or I'm not interested.

[identity profile] fredericks.livejournal.com 2008-03-10 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Like a candy bar or some sort of truffle-like thing, right? That's how I am as well. I never buy chocolate bars by themselves.

I used to be all for the white chocolate, but I'm warming up to milk. Dark can be good, sometimes e.g., with strawberries. But it has to be good chocolate. None of this Hershey's or Nestlé bullcrap.

*grin* Nice icon, btw.
I usually like white chocolate in cookies, not so much by itself. I've never had dark with fresh fruit; I think that'd prolly help with the bitterness.

[identity profile] melancthe.livejournal.com 2008-03-09 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I .. like dark chocolate because it's not as sweet and sickly (to me) as other forms of chocolate. Dark chocolate is the only sort I'll eat on its own. *shifty eyes*

[identity profile] fredericks.livejournal.com 2008-03-10 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
See, I *like* the sweetness. Chocolate has always been sweet on my palate, which is why I'm having such a hard time with the dark chocolate.

[identity profile] mintyduck.livejournal.com 2008-03-09 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I like them ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

[identity profile] fredericks.livejournal.com 2008-03-10 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
*grin* Good answer!

[identity profile] devoosha.livejournal.com 2008-03-09 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I like them all too :) But nothing is good as Hershey's milk chocolate to me :)

Other than Lindt Chocolates...mmm...

[identity profile] fredericks.livejournal.com 2008-03-10 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I like the occasional Hershey Kiss too. I had no idea people considered it waxy. Heck, I think the wax is what I like most about it.

[identity profile] wolfsavard.livejournal.com 2008-03-09 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Specifically vegan chocolate right now as it's the only kind I can eat!

[identity profile] fredericks.livejournal.com 2008-03-10 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
"Can" or "choose to"? Vegan by choice or dietary restriction?

[identity profile] wolfsavard.livejournal.com 2008-03-10 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I gave it up for Lent so "choose to" I guess.

[identity profile] fredericks.livejournal.com 2008-03-10 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
That's awesome. My brother gave up red meat, but going vegan is, like, an 11. I was wondering where all those amazing cupcakes were coming from. :)

I miss brie and pizza.

[identity profile] atraxia.livejournal.com 2008-03-09 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
i looooooooooooove that movie.

[identity profile] fredericks.livejournal.com 2008-03-10 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
"Just let your Soooooooooooul Glooo, whoo!"
I've always liked it, but one summer I spent up at school working I was with this one white dude who went on and on about how Coming to America was the greatest movie ever made, and now I can't help but think on him when I check it out.

dark is very good when paired with another, sweeter flavor -- i like it with mint. there are also some fine darks that are tasty on their own, like the newman's own bars.

i just had cake. why am i participating in this thread again?

[identity profile] fredericks.livejournal.com 2008-03-10 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
The few times I've had dark chocolate by itself I've usually spit it back out. With mint it works, but anything less cloyingly sweet doesn't work for me. Then again, maybe I haven't had any *good* dark chocolate. I shall try this Newman's Own bar.

[identity profile] lanaya1980.livejournal.com 2008-03-09 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I like chocolate full stop, but nothing beats Cadbury's for me.

[identity profile] fredericks.livejournal.com 2008-03-10 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I like the fruit and nut bars...that is Cadbury, right?

[identity profile] sternel.livejournal.com 2008-03-09 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I've had so many bad milk chocolates in my life. ::shudders:: Especially Hershey's , which just taste like wax to me now. Dark chocolate is richer and stronger and just MORE CHOCOLATE. ::nods::

[identity profile] fredericks.livejournal.com 2008-03-10 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm thinking I should hunt down some good dark chocolate in the future. Maybe I've been dissuaded by bad examples.

[identity profile] captainschlumpy.livejournal.com 2008-03-09 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I love dark chocolate! especially if it's mint dark chocolate, preferably with espresso in it! mmmmmmm.....

[identity profile] fredericks.livejournal.com 2008-03-10 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
See, the espresso is extra bitterness! How can you stomach it all??

[identity profile] xioley.livejournal.com 2008-03-10 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
I love, love, love dark chocolate: the darker, the better. I like my desserts kind of bitter. I like white chocolate a lot too. I love minty chocolate A LOT.

[identity profile] fredericks.livejournal.com 2008-03-10 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I can take the bitterness if it has an accompanying sweetness. All the dark chocolate I've had has just lingered on my palate like extra strong unsweetened coffee. With the cloying sweet mint I can take it. Otherwise I sort of wuss out.

[identity profile] colonel-taisa.livejournal.com 2008-03-10 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Dark chocolate is love! I hate white chocolate thought. Really, really hate it!

[identity profile] fredericks.livejournal.com 2008-03-10 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
White chocolate I can take in cookies with macadamia nuts. Otherwise, nope. It's just filler with a hint of cocoa butter.

[identity profile] darker-one.livejournal.com 2008-03-10 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
Dark is okay if it's paired with another flavour, like milk, or orange, but generally I'm all for milk chocolate (particularly Cadbury... mmm...cadbury chocolate...), with a good white chocolate coming in second.

[identity profile] drjayphd.livejournal.com 2008-03-10 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
When I saw "Sexual Chocolate" as an option, I thought you meant this guy:

But now that I see the video, that is the only correct answer. :D

[identity profile] fredericks.livejournal.com 2008-03-10 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember this guy. Not what I was referring, though. :) You haven't seen Coming to America?

[identity profile] drjayphd.livejournal.com 2008-03-10 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Long ago, and I wouldn't have remembered that bit anyway. :\

[identity profile] army-kitten.livejournal.com 2008-03-10 03:04 pm (UTC)(link)
dark chocolate!!! though not more than 70% cocoa, or it's not sweet enough for me. and it has to be good quality chocolate too. hershey's is like 20% wax or something, just so it won't melt. eugh. one thing i've never understood is white chocolate. like, how is that really chocolate? isn't it just sugar, wax, and milk?

[identity profile] emily-goddess.livejournal.com 2008-03-10 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I went with dark, but it really depends on my mood. A really good dark chocolate is meant to be savored rather than wolfed down - just like good espresso or dark beer. If I'm in a wolfing-down mood, I tend toward the sweeter, milkier kinds, as long as they're not crap (Hershey is mostly wax - how is that even edible?).
