fredericks: (Sleepy Vince)

Sunday Snooze.

My uncle got married yesterday (ceremonial marriage, as he and his bride went to the courthouse a few months back), and I won a bet in regards to what song would definitely be played. You see, the bride is from the Ivory Coast and my uncle is from Trinidad. I maintained that any wedding involving black folks is hands-down guaranteed to have the Cha-Cha Slide blasting from speakers at one point, no matter the origins of the celebrants. For the younger black set The Cupid Shuffle is almost mandated by law. And, wouldn't you know, folks ran to the dance floor to slide to the left and then slide to the right.

So, question: are there any songs that you're guaranteed to hear at weddings you attend? I want titles, plz.

I pulled out my Sleepy Vince icon because Queer as Folk is coming out on DVD. Donkey Kong theme music soundtrack (really? who did pick that bit?) and fantastical ending aside, this series holds a special place in my heart.

Speaking of things I enjoy, if you have access to ESPN I *highly* recommend watching ESPN's 30 for 30 documentaries when they air. I'm a casual sports fan and I've been glued to my seat for the majority of the docs I've seen (The Best That Never Was, on high school football star Marcus Dupree, was particularly great, along with The Two Escobars, on Columbian soccer during the time of the 1994 World Cup), but I think even non-fans will find something they like.

I think the Electric Slide has been played at pretty much every single wedding I've ever been to. Journey's "Faithfully" seems to be a popular choice, too.

Electric Slide used to be the go-to song for peeps 'round my way until the Cupid Shuffle and Cha-Cha Slide came out. The older folks still bust it out.

Ah, Journey. Can't go wrong.

And, for weddings, I forgot to mention Heatwave's Always and Forever. I can't even front, if I ever get married I'll probably have that song as my first dance. I'm such a sap.

"Sweet Home Alabama" has been played at every wedding I've ever been to, despite the fact I live in Florida. This includes my cousins' weddings in New Jersey. It came on and I was like "Wtf? Really? I get out of the south and still can't escape this song."

Okay, that's effin' hilarious. :)

Quite sad. And educational. But mainly sad.

The Electric Slide is pretty much a requirement at the weddings I've been to. The theme from Footloose comes up a lot, too.

Is it wrong that I find that funny as hell? Because, Footloose! I love it.

I wasn't surprised when it came on at my brother's wedding, because my dad used to play the soundtrack for us when we were kids. But then I heard it at other weddings, and apparently it's a thing.

Yes! This is true. I've heard it at tons of weddings.

lol Okay, y'all win. I just keep thinking that if the theme for Footloose played I'd fall out into the floor laughing.

Only tangentially related, but at my wedding, we hadn't picked a first dance song, and ended up dancing to "Man of Constant Sorrow." Strangely prophetic, given the fate of my marriage!

Gah. It would seem so.

I have only been to one wedding, lol.

Don't think you're missing *too* much. It's like a party but overrun with people related to one another than your casual acquaintances. Drunken hook ups become that much more shameful in the morning.

All the DJs around Barrie are seriously into the cheesy group dances... like YMCA & Macarena. I've heard Cotton Eyed Joe and Black Betty at pretty much every wedding I've been to as well.

I saw Footloose mentioned above-- that was at played at the last wedding I went to.

Another one that has been popping up lately is that awful "Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy" song.

*grin* I love it. That's awesome. My HS friend is Romanian/Venezuelan and her husband is America, and Cotton-Eyed Joe was played at the reception. Threw me for a loop. YMCA too, now that I think of it. Anything to get the crowd on the floor.
