Sep. 3rd, 2005 01:15 amHey - want to do something but don't know what? DONATE. Every little bit helps.
*
I am scared about my impending trial-by-fire once school starts, worried about Krishna's declining health, and alternating between anger/sadness by the happenings in the areas affected by Katrina, so I decided to spend my worries away. Foolish, I know, but I got paid yesterday and being a social pariah I have little else to do for distraction. Picked up the last three GN's of Jack Robinson's Starman, Christopher Paolini's Eragon, "Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge" by My Chemical Romance (I figure, hells, I might as well hand in my outsider card already) and Kayne West's new album. West's thing is good, I think; haven't made it all the way through yet. Been bobbing my head quite a bit, so that's always good.
*
I apologize for not commenting much in other's entries. I've been reading, but I just haven't thought of much to say. Been trying to remedy that.
*
I sorely dislike reading Oprah Bookclub-worthy books in book clubs, but I do it because sometimes I learn something. Why is it that people can't muster it in themselves to approach suggested GN's in the same light? Give it a bloody try - you might learn a little something. Blankets is intriguing. Why can no one else see that? *sigh* Every time I read it I fall more and more in love with it.

Date: 2005-09-03 11:26 am (UTC)Personally, I don't comment a lot in the journals I'm friended with unless I feel I actually have something to add to the conversation, or want to get my point or experience across. There are exceptions, of course...
I do read all the entries, but just don't comment if I don't think my input will be required.
So, I don't expect people to feel they have to comment in mine for that sort of reason. If they see something they want to respond to, then that's when they should comment - not just because they feel they have to comment by necessity.

Date: 2005-09-03 02:19 pm (UTC)I don't comment just to say "Tee hee!" or "Me too!" because, frankly? I hate that shit. Neither am I a comment whore and expect everyone to reply to my posts.
Clarification is a wonderful thing.

Date: 2005-09-03 02:40 pm (UTC)I found Blankets on the system, so I put it on hold. Since you reccommend it, I reckon it'll be good.
the Book Page that we have on the library has Christopher Paolini on it, but I didn't pay it any attention. Now I reckon I'll read it and see what its about.

And as for your deleted post - yeah, I do tend to ramble on a bit... why say one word, when I can say 10 for exactly the same thing :) [I have a habit of just typing out what's in my head]

Date: 2005-09-03 02:50 pm (UTC)GN = Graphic novel. A novel, but with pictures! Or a number of comics pressed into book form. Blankets is a GN, btw. I like it because it mirrors my faith journey, more or less. It's a tale about searching and questioning - whether or not you end up liking where the author finds himself at the end, you sort of have to admire his chutzpah for taking the journey in the first place when many people can't or won't.
The Paolini thing makes me a touch bitter, because he's supposedly some 24-year-old kid who wrote and his mom submitted his stuff to various publishers before one accepted it and it slowly took off. Eragon is the first book in the series (trilogy?) and the second book recently knocked the new Harry Potter book off the bestseller list in the US. I can't vouch for it being good or not; I only picked it up because I wanted to read a dragon tale and that one was on discount.
How's school treating you? My classes start on the 7th and I'm getting really nervous about the whole accelerated pace thing. But I do have a nifty uniform and stethoscope! All I can do at this point is confirm people's hearts are, in fact, beating. Fascinating.

Date: 2005-09-03 03:38 pm (UTC)Ahhhh. WE have a bunch of graphic novels on display right now. I never really looked at them too hard, to be honest.
Hee @ I only picked it up because I wanted to read a dragon tale and that one was on discount. It sounds pretty good, but let me know it you like it. I requested Eragon already. He's cute, that Paolini.
SCHOOL IS HORRIBLE/fabulous. I have to study, study, study unless I want to flunk out on Monday. It's really overwhelming, you know, and I really don't know what any of my professors expect out of me. The only fun part in it all is Fundamentals lab, where you're actually doing hands on nursing stuff. But the most important part is studying. Well that and actually learning.
HAH. I have my whole little kit of mess, and a stethoscope and BP cuff. I look forward to learning how to use them, although I don't think it's coming up for another week or so. Our uniforms haven't come in yet :-\
Accelerated pace? Good luck. And study. Study study study. Study til your eyes bleed out of the sockets. Not that I've actually done that. Or any studying at all, come to think of it.

Date: 2005-09-03 03:58 pm (UTC)I just, finally, snagged a copy of Battle Royale. Japanese kids running around an island trying to kill each other. I have a copy of the movie, but I decided to read the book first. About 50 pages in and it's already pretty graphic.

Date: 2005-09-03 05:31 pm (UTC)Battle Royale (an aside - I went into a Barnes and Noble to look for the book and, not finding it on the shelves, I asked Customer Service about it. I pronounced it "Battle Roy-AL", not "Battle Roil", and the snooty clerk kept trying to correct me. I was all "Bitch, if you fracking know what I'm saying look up the damn book and stop trying to act like you're my grammar school teacher". Of course, I said that in my head)...ouch. I hope it has some substance to it. I'd hate for the first book of our book club to be a bloodbath with only a smidge of actual plot. I'm still waiting for my Amazon order with it to come in, hopefully before the 13th.

Date: 2005-09-05 11:56 pm (UTC)I think I say that just to be contrary. *grin* Through Oprah's pimping I found She's Come Undone, which I thought was a pretty interesting book. I take issue with the ultra emotional books, the sort of things that I associate with The Big O. And she's introduced oodles and oodles of people to literary classics this summer, something I think is very noteworthy. My mother, a woman who rarely reads anymore, actually totes around Faulker because Oprah said it was okay.
