It's taken me four hours to complete a rather simple Risk Assessment assignment. I officially had a shit day.

To wit-
1. I was late to clinical by a hour and a half. Was supposed to get there for 7AM. Woke up at 6:45. Yay.
2. Left my two assignments for clinical at home, and had to scramble to complete them while a fellow student was waiting for me to assist him with bathing a patient.
3. Did sump'tin to my left ("good") knee while rushing to clinical, because it's achy as a mofo.
4. Have a subcutaneous (read "unpoppable") pimple on my forehead right below my hairline roughly the size of Mt. Everest. You know, one of the types you can feel throbbing as you go about your day.
5. Keep thinking about things like "nutsicles", "nutsackulicious", "neuticles" (thanks [livejournal.com profile] faedrake, you're a real mensch , *smile*) and any bit of ridiculousness that can be riffed off of "nut sack" (yesterday I kept repeating "Grab life by the testicles!", so I suppose this can be seen as either progress or major regression).
6. Have to face an incredibly shrinking Krishna, and a family that can give two craps about whether or not she actually eats.
7. Fucking YANKEES are losing!!(!!!!111) Anaheim can suck these nuts(icles).

*sigh*

Weekend wasn't too horrible. Went to AC, lost all my money in a record one hour. Stayed in the hotel, took a jacuzzi bath for the first time (didn't really live up to the hype), got a great view of the beachfront, want to return if only for the view. Celebrated mom's b-day in a Brazilian bar-b-que joint that sucked you-know-what. What? people don't eat grilled animal flesh on Sunday nights, peoples?

I need help. And sexin'. Perhaps not in that order.
Maybe I just need help.

Anyway, everyone likes to click on things. Help a sista out here.

[Poll #587831]

I've started on Eragon and wasn't too happy with it, but I'm not adverse to picking it up again. Same thing goes for Luck in the Shadows. The awkward exposition is proving to be a major roadblock to my getting beyond the first 15 pages. Game of Thrones would be a re-(re-re-)read in anticipation of the upcoming new book in the series. The rest I have in my possession but haven't even flipped through yet.

As a Bostonian and a Red Sox fan, I have no pity for you Yankees fans. NO QUARTER FOR YOU! And I spent much of the weekend not being able to get this stupid report done, until I did. Hope things look up tomorrow. It sucks when everything goes poorly at once.

Shyouknow, the one bit of solace I took for that utterly nutackular loss the Yankees just took from the Angels (the Angels!! they got beat by the Heavenly Host! Jesus; who did Steinbrenner piss off, eh?) was that the Sawks lost a couple of days before. So THERE, you no quarter-giving snackmeister. Hee!

*sigh* I'll have to find another bandwagon to jump on at the last minute, tis all.

Congrats on the report getting done, and thanks for the cheer.

Yo to number four. I absolutely hate those pimples when you can't do anything about them other than feel them throbbing menacingly (and getting redder and more prominent) during the course of the day.

And then you get really self-conscious, thinking that it'll form that disgusting white cap while you're going about your day, making people stare at you even more than they would because, hello!, you've got Mt. Everest on your forehead.

It's gone down some. I think I worried it back into submission.

You know, I love A Game of Thrones. Yeeeah. I have Luck in the Shadows too, but I had the same issue... couldn't quite get by the first bit. Dad says he loved it but.... yeah.

George RR Martin makes me happy.

George RR Martin makes me happy.

Very much so. The fun part is that it's been a while since I re-read Thrones, so I remember very little of what occurs in it. Except for the child-killing. I love me a man who has no problem writing kid deaths.

I ordered the 2nd Storm of Swords book a couple of weeks ago, and it got lost in the mail. I have to wait until tomorrow before I can register my complaint with the company I ordered it from, and hopefully get a replacement.
Before GRRM, I'd actually not read any proper fantasy beyond LOTR, and it's a damn good read.
I may have to buy Game of Thrones for myself at some point, since I'd borrowed it from a friend

Really? No fantasy? So what do you read?

The new book comes out in the US in November, I believe. I've no idea about the UK release.

Currently, I'm reading the Dan Brown books [on Digital Fortress just now], and I've read a fair bit of Tom Clancy.
Read a few Star Wars books, and a small number of Stephen King.
Read all the Terry Pratchett Discworld books [not really fantasy, more medieval with 'modern' technology].
Beyond that, I don't have a "genre" I read. I've just never been advised to read much fantasy stuff.

UK release for Storm of Crows is this Monday. I'll be waiting until I get it. Especially since I've not read the previous...

Feast of Crows, you mean? Dammit. You guys always get the cool stuff first. Amazon says November 8th for us across the pond.

I keep hearing about Discworld but I've never read it. The number of books in the series is sort of daunting.

A Feast for Crows, it turns out to be...
It's because I'm awaiting Storm of Swords...

It's rare for us to get things before you lot, so I think we'll savour this one [even if I don't get the chance]

The Discworld series is great. Funny as hell.["+ Mine, WAAAAH! +"] The first couple of books I'd only recommend, though, as an introduction to the universe. They're just not as good as the later ones.
I'd also recommend reading them in order.
They're not difficult reads, and if you have the time, they'll only take a day or so each to read - the early ones less

And, I have just discovered from my Fantasy fan friend, Cara, that got me into GRRM that A Feast for Crows was released today

Because, Gardino, you're a busy man and I'm a crazy gal and our schedules never seem to mesh.

But, worry not - the love remains strong. We have to catch up some more one of these days. Stop being so busy and important and whatnot. *grin*

your icon made me squirt iced coffee on this here monitor.

yeah, you'd expect me to say easy riders. since it's at this point the definitive text on the 1970s "new hollywood", i used it as a reference for my practice thesis on hal ashby. however, biskind has some problems with koppy eduteng that his editor didn't clear up, and it was prevalent enough that it made me question the facts of the book. (this is even worse in down & dirty pictures, in case you were wondering.) my honey [livejournal.com profile] hauntedbookshop read jonathan strange and really liked it, so i pass that rec along to you.

oh, and as a brewers fan i have no sympathy for either of you. :-P

Hee! Brewers.
*ahem*

The quote, btw, is from Queer as Folk. The comedy is in the droll delivery. And the nuts.

Yes, I expected only one vote for Easy Rider and I did expect it to come from you. Color me surprised. He's sloppy with the writing, huh? That's reason enough to return the book to the library when it's due without renewing it.

I like the thick reading, but Strange is imposingly large. The library only had the hardcover and the thing is bordering on weapon status. But it still looks plenty interesting.

apparently strange moves rather quickly. it's in the "his dark materials" camp, in the sense that it's mega-huge but you end up reading it in one night.

ob-riders: when i told my film theory prof i wanted to use it as a reference for my fake thesis, he said "yeah, you're lucky. it's mostly factual with ashby." there's a good book to be written about that scene, but errb skews towards the beach-read end of things. not that i was expecting good scholarship, but cripes.

the brewers fandom is kind of a longstanding inside joke. essentially i hate sox fans and am not too fond of the yankees, and ended up choosing "my" team based on the mascot. and any team with a mascot that could be an extra in the saddest music in the world is a-ok by me.

I definately recommend Luck in the Shadows! I've read all of that series and I love it! I'm reading Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell right now. It's...eh. Very slow going. Transformation is also good, though I was disappointed in some of the character developement and haven't read any of the others. Hope your day gets less fuck nutty!

Uh-oh. The reviews for Transformation seemed so encouraging! I ordered that and Shadows after doing a web search on Gay Sci-Fi/Fantasy and finding the two listed there among other works. There were a number of people on a sci-fi/fantasy LJ comm I frequented that despised Shadows for some reason (I think they had a problem with the resolution or the writing), so I think I'm going into it thinking it may be crap. Hence when I run into awkward sloppy exposition (most of the first few pages) I find it hard to convince myself it might get better as I go along. I do understand it's Flewelling's first published book so there's room for growth. Stupid brain.

What was it about Transformation that turned you off? Can you share that much without spoiling me? *grin*

From: [identity profile] captainschlumpy.livejournal.com
well, I agree it is a bit hard to make it throught the first few pages of shadows but keep going, it gets better and Seregil is a great character. I liked the second book better. As for Transformation, without spoiling it too much I guess all I can say is I don't know why it was on a gay sci-fi fantasy list. Also, some of the scenes were very rushed and awkward. Maybe it was just me, I think almost all of the reviews for this series were positive. Check out Robin Hobb when you get a chance. Her assassins apprentice and Tawny man series are great!

I voted for Luck in the Shadows, because I liked the name. Ah, so subjective.

Luck in the Shadows, when you take the title without context, sounds like it'd make a great porn movie title.

Not that I'm saying that's why you chose it, of course.
