fredericks: (Scrubs See you there playa!)

I don't know precisely why I'm awake at 6AM on a Saturday after only having gone to bed four hours ago, but it might have something to do with the ginormous cup of coffee I had a couple of hours before coming home. Mebbe. I think so. Actually, I only slept from 2AM 'til around 4:45AM, which is *worse*. Yet I feel surprisingly not like crap. I'll give myself a couple of hours.

The last couple of days:
- I handed in my letter of resignation Thursday morning. My last day will be May 25th (night, to be more precise: I think I'm working the 25th into the 26th, but I need to figure this out with TPTB). My manager finally decided to come into work early so I could meet with her face-to-face and tell her the workplace sucks and I'm going out in a blaze of glory explain my reasons for leaving (at least, the polite on-the-record reasons for leaving). Of course she started out with "you'd be a great loss; what can I do for you to get you to stay?", and then went on about how I was "one of the better nurses working" which, yeah, where the fuck was that sentiment during the one and a half years I shed blood, sweat, and tears for you, lady?? I simply smiled and continued to shake my head. Then she fed me a line about seeing about creating a new position for me, one that would have me work eight hour shifts with more duties that involved patient education and less floor work. A-huh, and I'm still waiting for those laptops you promised to have on the floor way back when I was hired. She finally realized I hadn't, in fact, been born the day before, so she wished me luck and sent me on my way. And she agreed to write a reference for me, so I'm basically all set.

From work I went straight into the city to sign my offer letter with the new job. Needless to say I was exhausted as all hell. It was paperwork paperwork and more paperwork (although finding out that I was getting a big sign-on bonus was a huge-ass plus), and then they sent me to a place a couple of blocks away to get my physical. The place itself was a madhouse, and after waiting 15 minutes to be called for my chance to pee in a cup and get poked I called it a day and headed home. I have to do all that fun stuff no less than 12 days before I start, so I have plenty of time still.

- After Thursday's forced run-around I was exhausted, but I slept surprisingly little. Which was great (/sarcasm), as I had a full day of Comic-Con exploration planned for Friday. I met up with [livejournal.com profile] captainschlumpy about a half-hour or so after the Con opened to the general public. Things were surprisingly smooth, crowd control-wise. No real lines to speak of, and the layout was fairly intuitive. [livejournal.com profile] captainschlumpy was (cutely, I thought) organized, and had written down the location of the booths she wanted to visit, while my lazy ass was more from the "eh, we'll walk up and down and see who/what we see" school. As we were on a time limit (the Gaiman reading was at six, not seven as we'd originally been told) we sorta started wandering then zoomed in on certain areas. I didn't catch that many authors/faces I was familiar with - Orson Scott Card was there which...I have a love/hate/wtf thing going on with him at the moment; Grant Morrison and Garth Ennis are on the schedule for tomorrow (ha! today, I mean, Saturday); I know Naomi Novik said she'd be in attendance but I didn't get a chance to find her or her booth...maybe I'll see her today?; sadly, no surprise apperances by P. Craig Russell, Alan Moore, or George R.R. Martin - but, then again, we only ended up spending about an hour on the floor proper. The cool thing was that different publishers had unedited bound drafts of newer writers's works out for the taking. I grabbed four books that looked rather interesting, and plan on devouring them once my re-read of all things Dresden is wrapped up.

We stopped in on Vinyl Lane (as I called it) and it was utter.madness. The crowding in that area gave me 'Nam-like flashbacks to the first Con, it was so awful. [livejournal.com profile] captainschlumpy schooled me on different cool toys and picked up a nifty doll for herself (and the artist/designer was in attendance, so she got him to sign, which I thought was cool), and then I sorta fell in love with the Moofia line of toys. Dammit, they're cute AND hilarious! They steal milk from bad kids and give it to good kids so the good kids can become strong and beat up the bad kids! If you can't see the humor/irony in that you, my friends,...well, you're prolly more sane than I am. I mainly bought them for the boxes (I'll most likely end up taking pictures one of these days).

After that it was the Gaiman reading. We wrote down questions for him to answer halfway through and he touched on maybe ten or so (out of what had to have been a pile of 200), the funniest being some guy who asked Neil if he could ask a young woman in the audience dressed as Delirium for her number (yes, the two did end up exchanging numbers in the middle of Neil's session). He read three bits of his work to us, the longest being the third chapter of The Graveyard Book. I mean, I think that took a good hour plus for him to get through. He's an awesome reader, don't get me wrong, but I was a)exhausted and b)starving by that time in the evening. The Graveyard Book sounds really interesting, though.

When the reading was done we ended up meeting with my brother and heading out to Juniors for dinner. I was surprised the Con wrapped up so early this year (my brother texted me towards the end of Neil's reading to tell me things had basically closed up shop, and this was only around 8:30), as I distinctly remember there being events well into midnight during the first two days last year. Oh well.

Today I look forward to panels on Avatar, The Venture Bros., and Battlestar Galactica (Helo and Sharon are going to be there! Yayz!). Then, this evening: KIDS IN THE HALL! Ah, the win is *strong* in this day.

Since bro's not going to be with us today I can engage in way more fangirling with [livejournal.com profile] captainschlumpy this time around. Glee. *grin*

On a shallow note, I was called beautiful twice yesterday by two separate blokes which was...nice. The first time I initially felt I was being made fun of. The second time? A little easier to take gracefully. So *that's* what pretty people deal with on a daily basis? I think I can handle it.

6:00 am is way too early for a Saturday! I woke up at 7:00 this morning, which was bad enough.

Resigning sounds like fun. :) I hope I get the chance to do it soon too.

And btw, I am so, so jealous of you for going to Kids in the Hall live! That rocks!

7AM on purpose? Dude!
I'm pretty sure there's a line in the Geneva Conventions transcriptions about how waking up before 8AM on a Saturday is wrongwrongwrong.

Resigning sounds like fun.
The countdown aspect is the best part. You'll have your day soon. I sort of had in easy in that there's always a dearth of nurses and I didn't apply for a position with only one opening. Things will work out for you, I know it.

No, the 7:00 am was totally not on purpose. The sun was too bright, and I think subconsciously I was afraid of sleeping in too late, so when I accidentally woke up at 7:00, I couldn't get myself back to sleep.

Haha, did you ever get to see my old pal Grant Morrison? Did he actually manage to be somewhat coherent or was he too overwhelmed in his excitement about 2012 and extradimensional aliens and Barbelith to string together proper sentences? :v

(Not like you can understand him anyway with that vague Glaswegian accent)

I know Morrison was there, but it was early on on a day that I couldn't get up to the floor until late. And then you had to get tickets for his autograph session ahead of time. I'm a fan of his stuff, but not that hardcore.

So have you read The Invisibles, then? Did it succeed in driving you insane, or what?

I haven't read The Invisibles, although it seems I'll have to now. What about it makes it nutty?
