I've had a craptastic couple of days, capped by Governor Patterson's announcement of a potential 3.5 billion (BILLION!) healthcare cut to the state, with the bulk of that proposed cut being felt in NYC.

I drowned my sorrow in Malaysian food and hot chocolate with atraxia this evening. Not the best thing, all my other current issues considered, but fuck it, yo. Just...fuckity fuck.

Because people should not get sick. Or have babies (China? totally onto something with that whole "One Child Mandate". Only that's one kid too many.) And children are a lost cause anyway. Who needs education when you have Brain Age??

Our budget is eff'd up, but I don't see why education and healthcare seem to be the focus of the trimming. Crack down on Medicare and -caid abuse, sure, but 3.5 BILLION?? And isn't our educational system underperforming? what, taking away shit (like the inevitable art and phys ed cuts on the way, among other things) is going to make it all better. Jesus.

I just think education is one of the few things that will save this country and it pisses me off that they always look to that first. That's the LAST thing. And how can people even do anything if they're sick? It doesn't make sense.

Okay, so just...oh, a minute ago, I was thinking there will always be a need for Nurses (especially RN's) and teachers. What *is* a safe career path, I now wonder? And yeah, I guess people should stop getting sick/injured/having babies/getting immunized/getting too old to take care of themselves...or otherwise living, so long as they're not dying either.

(I know that it doesn't always matter, as our nation is built on a house of cards with everything precariously connected, but is your job directly funded by the state?)

There will always be a need for nurses and teachers. The nursing shortage? not a made up thing. Our population is getting older and sicker, and there are less nurses out there to care for them. However, cuts in Medicare and Medicaid mean that there's less money being brought into hospitals and various organizations for care of said individuals. Less money brought in means less money being put out in salary or whatnot. There's already talks of hospitals in my area making plans to lay off "non-essential" nurses and physicians, and my job's been talking about belt-tightening since our state's financial deficit was announced a couple of months back. My job's not directly funded by the state, but the only time we actually make money is when we treat pts who have Medicare or Medicaid. Rumor is we lose money when working with managed care pts because insurances are notoriously tightfisted.

I have to say, the times being what they are, there is no real *safe* career path. Layoffs are hitting everywhere. Just go with whatever has openings in your area at the time. Hell, maybe I'll start seriously looking at California for work options. Not that they're that much better off than NY, but still. 3.5 Billion. BILLION. The mind boggles.

I haven't looked closely at the way things stacked up, but if his perception was that education and healthcare were overfunded...seriously, where's the money gone to? Both those areas are underperforming in my region. Boggles the mind.

sorry to hear you are having craptastic days! Don't worry, the governor is gonna get all that money back by taxing soda! lol! yeesh. as if people arent' already struggling. He's also cutting education I see, buy lookie, the judges are getting a raise, bleh.

I wonder if he's throwing in everything and the kitchen sink so Washington can be lured into giving us money. But he surely is working for re-election the way he's catering to the upstaters. Seriously, all sorts of ridiculous.
