fredericks: (Being Veep is hard work *snore*)

I'm watching Kitchen Nightmares (Gordon Ramsey's U.S. version), and HOMG! it's like a Jerry Springer episode cranked to eleven. This episode is on the restaurant called Fiesta Sunrise, plagued with bad sanitary conditions and tons of familial drama in regards to the financial founding and future of the restaurant. The show's a half-hour through and there's been more time spent on the owner's personal issues than on the shoddy food content. Ack! And there are roaches all over the kitchen!!!! Don't they have health inspectors in West Nyack??? Sweet Bejesus. Gordon certainly is brutal but this is just off the chain. Such a lovely lovely train wreck.

I keep meaning to update but I lose my drive. There isn't much to share, at any rate. I worked this past weekend and got stuck with a shitty assignment - way more patients than I could handle. I asked for overtime instead of sucking it up and asking for per-diem for a certain number of cases...and one of my bosses came over and said she'd ask the weekend managers to give me a "lighter assignment." TPTB don't have a problem if you suck it up and do per-diem work if you're staff, but once you start asking for OT (I got 8 hours of OT this pay period) they want to make things "easy." Fine, less work for me. During NYC's blizzard-like episode on Wednesday I got sent to see patients and was allowed to go home when done, so I was at my house shoveling snow by 2pm. Another cool moment from the workplace? I ended up chatting over the phone for a good ten minutes with a celebrity I had a major crush on a couple years ago without realizing with whom I was speaking. I mentally "squee"'d for the rest of the day

No work today because of weekend shifts, and I spent the day doing a lot of nothing. I've been really pooped lately. Can't even really muster the energy to feign socializing. It's my normal: I'm not discontent but I'm just not happy. No complaints, and I always remember I'm lucky to have what I have and do what I do. But, you know *shrug*.

Valentine's Day is shaping up to be painful as per usual. I think I might try to run around the City that day instead of deal with looking at my brother and his somewhat annoying girlfriend canoodling in the house. Bro is nice, but he doesn't seem to understand that, yes, having your single sister hanging around while you and your girlfriend prepare a steak and lobster dinner is gonna be v. v. awkward. Might try to go and see Daybreakers if I can find it playing anywhere. I was interested in seeing Percy Jackson until I caught the reviews, found out it was being directed by Chris Columbus, and saw that Percy looks old enough to be a freshman in college.

Funny bit: at the moment the 'rents are both in Trinidad for Carnival and oldest bro and I got calls from a number of our concerned relatives on the day of the blizzard/snow condition on Tuesday who were inquiring how we were holding up. At which point I had to reply "you do realize our combined age is 55, right?" Yes, I'm way too old.

Happy Friday, all.

The movie does not look very encouraging. I can't see how they'd intend to make any more movies if they start with Percy being 16-17 instead of 12. Honestly, I know the books were Harry Potter Lite, but it seems like in their move to try to make the movies different from the Potter films they've decided to leave the tropes and themes that make the two series similar and do a cosmetic lift of everything that made Percy enjoyable.

And I've been privy to your Rainbow Brite rage, trust me. I think we started up on that together at one point. :)

Columbus aged Percy up deliberately because of his experience with Harry Potter: that the actors aged faster than the films were made, so while you had an eleven year old playing an eleven year old in the first movie, you soon ended up with a sixteen year old playing a thirteen year old, and it didn't really work. So that casting decision, at least, I can get behind. Also, I thought the main three actors did a pretty good job with their characters.

Without spoiling too much, I will say that the film is much more dark and dramatic than the books, and lacks most of the lighthearted silliness. Poseidon's Hawaiian shirt is replaced with a srs bsnss black outfit, and that's just the first scene of the movie (don't get me started on the costuming, I could go for hours. Oy).

On the other hand, Daybreakers is the biggest waste of money I've had the misfortune of seeing in some time, and given the choice I'd say you should go with Percy. The Lightning Thief isn't horrible, it's just...disappointing.

That logic I can understand. And as you've seen the movie the aging didn't seem to bother you in regards to story and relationships. My gut reaction, having read the books and not watched the film, is to be annoyed that we're now forced to confront and content with the hormone issues of someone firmly stuck in his teen years as opposed to dealing with a budding twelve year old. And, hey, I liked Brandon Jackson in Tropic Thunder, but he's not the strongest actor out there imo. But way to add some diversity to the satyr, I guess.

Feel free to spoil, btw, unless you're going to do a review in your journal (which I'd really like to read). According to reviews I know Daybreakers is supposed to bring teh suck hard, but I'd like to think it might surprise me a la the way I took to Underworld (liked that one a lot), and I'll take being disappointed after going in with no expectations as opposed to being let down when going in with unavoidably high expectations any day.
