You make a great point. People use music, writing, journals, etc, as outlets for emotions they can't let go in the presence of others. I bitch a lot too in my journal...but basically it's because I can't bitch to anyone that much.
I think that it is an interesting phenomena that people believe that artists really are as dark or crazy as their music/writing seem to make them.
