Broadway Ramble
Sep. 25th, 2004 11:22 amYesterday - Jewish High Holy day. No school for me. W00t! I'd told my aunt that I would sleep over by her house from Thursday night, but for a number of reasons I backed out. So, out of guilt and an impending sense of boredom I asked her out for lunch and a movie on Friday (yesterday). I ended up meeting her at her job (Chamber Street? I forget; somewhere adjacent to the World Trade) and waiting for her for nearly an hour in her office. It was nice. From the 14th floor she had a great view of downtown and the Hudson. All the people bustling back and forth, the sun making its way across the sky. Yes, I so want to live in the city.
Anywhos, we went to TKTS (?) and picked up some bargain tickets to "Rent". I don't remember how our trip to the movies morphed into seeing a Broadway show, to be honest. I really didn't have the money for it. My aunt ended up footing the bill there, and I paid for our dinner at a nearby TGI Fridays (that bastion of exotic cuisine...I really could have gone for some Dim Sum at Ruby Foo's, but she wasn't into it). The show itself was okay. I knew a lot more of the music from it than I originally thought. Drew Lashey was in it; he had that monotone-ish vocal delivery that always seems to spell mediocre actor to me. Nice waste of money and time, although, to be honest, I really could have just done with McDonalds (dim sum! dim sum!) and an early evening showing of "Shaun of the Dead". I'm very low-maintenance.
Times Square/Broadway at night is always interesting. We left the theatre at 10:30?, and although our train had a station almost right outside "Rent"'s doors, my aunt decided to walk down to 50th Street instead. All the tourists and residents walking around, coming out from shows, pouring into clubs, grabbing late dinners...it made for disgustingly packed sidewalks. And a pissed off me. I detest walking through crowds of people, I really do. And EIGHT blocks of it. I was about to flip out. It didn't help that everytime a crowd congregated my aunt wanted to see what was going on. I tried to be patient, knowing that she just wanted to relax and have fun for a bit, but I wasn't much good at it. I just wanted to be home in my bed reading under the covers by that point (I'd stayed up until 5:30 the night before finishing "The Dark Tower" and was exhausted). We made it to the subway sanity intact, anger contained.
I stayed by her house because she had no car to take me home with, and I woke up to a voice yelling. Just like I was home. I thought it was my mom initially, but then I realized it was my aunt (twins - my aunt's accent is thicker because she was in Trinidad longer). I'm thinking to myself "THIS is what I'm going to have to put up with if I move in?" She was yelling at my great-grandmother for I don't know what reason. Seemed like she was frustrated by something the older woman had said. Eh. ::shrug:: I was all "let me get home NOW". Got dressed and headed downstairs, then she got around to dropping me off.
On the ride over she said "Last night was wonderful! We really should do it again sometime". I looked down and said "Definitely". I meant it, though.
