My shift is from 7PM to 7AM. I didn't end up leaving the hospital this morning until 10:15. The patients weren't particularly difficult as much as I'm just slow as molasses. When I was in aikido the instructor would poke fun at my movements, the way I was always methodical and slow with my actions. Slower than everyone else in our dojo, at the very least. I don't work well when I'm rushed, and the hospital setting is all about being rushed: rushing to make sure meds are handed out on-time (at night that window is even smaller - patients don't want someone coming in to bring them their lopressor at 11:30PM, no matter if the patient down the hall is tachycardic and the patient on the other side is actively bleeding), rushing to make sure charting is done before anything critical happens, rushing to get admissions done and in the computer, etc. I'm sure a big part of my problem is simply that I'm new and learning, but I know me (ha). I never envisioned myself working bedside for any length of time.

But sort of off-track...I gave report to the other nurse by 7:40 and spent the remainder of my time doing my charts and notes. On the ride home I got the urge to watch Spiderman 2, which I'm finally getting around to doing it now. I got in at noon, fell asleep around 2:30 (nervous energy?), woke up at 5:00, watched PTI (there IS a God, and he hates Le Bastard too!), and have been up since. It might explain the weird tension headache I feel building but Spiderman will be watched in its entirety, dammit!

There's a pretty good set of questions up at [livejournal.com profile] thefridayfive this week, but in lieu of 'em I found the interview questions [livejournal.com profile] xioley asked me which I'd neglected to answer. Good times!

1. How is nursing different/similar than you thought it would be?
I don't recall having too many thoughts on the field before starting in it besides knowing my aunt was, like, super-smart and she seemed to find the work rewarding. I knew it was hard, I knew it was grunt-work. I guess the big thing I didn't understand while on the outside was how much paperwork is involved. Chart chart chart, even when it's redundant, because we're living in the age of lawsuits.

2. What is your biggest draw to BSG (I haven't watched it ever, and I've gotten mixed reviews)?
Was, I suppose, as the love has waned a bit. The writing in the first season (in particular, although there are some highlights in the second and third) was intelligent, the characters deep and intriguing, and, man, the sets were just so shiny! There's a quality about the miniseries that sucked me in during the first ten minutes. I wanted to know *why* the Cylons decided to show up after all that time and I *knew* they were going to kick major ass when they did. And, oh, what a great miniseries it was. Excellent introduction to the show.

3. What would be the ultimate slash fic pairing?
*grin* Ultimate? as in scary? Bush/Cheney? This is a hard one to answer. Anyone have any suggestions? I certainly know which ones I like, but ultimate...?

4. How long do you think you'll wind up living at home? Do you think you'll stay in the NYC area indefinitely?
Gah, the question that haunts me. I figure three more years minimum, five years tops. Rent's cheaper than anywhere else I could stay. And I like NYC but I also like Seattle. I have to live in a big city, at least in this point in my life. I'd have to shop around and see where I feel I fit best. The West Coast has a mellow vibe I find comforting so, meh. I'll see.

5. What are you favorite/least favorite things about your life right now?
Faves: steady paycheck, job, takes more than a couple of minutes to find things to bitch about, my current location
Non-faves: single, occasionally find the need to find things to bitch about, loan repayments, living with the 'rents
I'm the happiest I've been in at least five years, but even in the worst of times I have difficulty coming up with answers to a question like the one above. I go about my day on a pretty even keel, taking things as they come.
