A little bit of this, and some of that.
Jan. 2nd, 2006 06:32 pmBefore my New Years Eve spiraled into an episode of Cops things went fairly well. The Brandenburg Concerti performance at St. Barts turned out to be pretty good, the acoustical problems inherent in performing in a space with ceilings well over a hundred feet aside. The recorder player in me was miffed that they used flutes for the 4th (my favorite concerto, stemming from a rather horrendous rendition of it a couple of friends and I put on during HS - it's a memory tinged with embarrassment and pride). The 5th, also a favorite, felt a bit rushed; it was like the conductor couldn't wait to make his way through the harpsichord solo. I'm officially converted on the 3rd, though. The strings did a lovely job.
Events had me feeling pretty out of it on New Years, so I decided to buy myself a little something. Foolish, I know, but what the hell. Went over to Best Buy and bought one of the niftily padded dance mats and the Special Edition of Office Space that comes with a mug (Lumbergh's picture is on it...yeeeah), a stapler (red, but not the Swingline), and a bunch of other curious things. My grandmother (paternal) was up from Florida so I asked her to come to church with me. Service wasn't as good as I'd like, as they had the organist in. I much prefer when it's just the singer (dude sounds exactly like Michael Crawford which, to me, is a good thing) and the other guy on guitar. They had this new woman in who was operatically singing for all it was worth. Distracting. Otherwise nice sermon. Introduced my grandmother to the reverend, this Jamaican guy who seems to have taken a slight shine to me (*slight* being the optimal word there, and completely and utterly platonic being the implication). He complimented me and my church-going skillz, I guffawed and said thanks, then we left. Played some Dance Dance later that night with the bros. I'm still not quite back up to speed, but I'm getting there slowly. Very slowly.
Went to the mall this morning with my grandmother (maternal) and aunt. I had no money to throw around but found myself hoping I'd be able to locate Season 1 of Battlestar Galactica so I could get my grandmother to buy it instead of the clothing she was keen on getting for me. Found it at FYE, but thought the 59.99 tag was too high. Went to Circuit City and it wasn't there. Caved in when I came home and added it to my Amazon book purchase for the Grammar Improvement class. Bad me. Bad.
Currently I'm listening to my mother and father fight about Lord knows what. Something about affairs, money, who knows. Opportune, since everyone's been talking about my aunt's marriage for the last couple of days. The day really was looking up until a couple of hours ago. Blah blah, emo.
Oh yes. I'm zooming though Jonathan Strange. I'm loving the book, even though it took me forever to get past the first hundred pages. Once I hit the prophecy things perked up. We'll either meet this week to discuss it or I'll chuck the meeting altogether and move onto the next book.

Date: 2006-01-03 12:36 am (UTC)Thing the second, Cops? Wow. That's...special.
Thing the third, what exactly is that book about? I keep seeing it around and it looks intriguing, but...I don't know what it's about and I apparently don't have the capacity to pick it up and read the blurb.

re: Cops
Yeah. Just yeah.
re:the third
Strange is fantastical fiction about magic in England during the early - mid 1800s. I think it starts out rather slowly, but when it kicks in it's so amusing. Think English literary writing of the period (Dickens, Austen) - that's the style Clarke works in. You should check out Amazon.com and see if they have an excerpt you can read. The copious footnotes are highly amusing as well.
