I'm sitting here watching Grey's Anatomy out of necessity. The assignment for my Nursing in the Media class is to watch some medical shows and report back on negative/positive images of nursing. The problem I'm running into now is that I hate medical shows and I have no idea who's a nurse and who's a doctor on this thing. I suppose the nurses are wallflowers, hmm? I wasn't aware that the title character was a woman. I guess that's a plus. These residents are really well rested, aren't they? Bwah. Real life needs to smack this show in the head.

One other thing - where the frak are the nurses? In a real hospital the nurses outnumber the doctors like crazy.Hyperbole and I are bedfellows, you see. Upon further contemplation nurses may not *vastly* outnumber doctors (taking into account residents, interns, and the full-fledged MDs), but they at least can be found at equal numbers. Shame on you, show. You mean this hospital is run by doctors? Lord, I can just imagine the payroll issues.

I was watching SC and amusing myself by checking the translations. There's a scene in episode three where Jin and his young charge dress up in order to infiltrate a brothel (long story). In the English dub the kid tells Jin he looks good in the female attire. Jin responds "It's quite uncomfortable". I immediately hear the tap-tap-tapping of keyboards as the fanfics using that statement as canon are brought to life. When I switched over to the subtitled Japanese Jin's reported to say "I am uncomfortable with this". Very much different, no? Let me not even get started on the translation quibbles in the scene with Jin and the gay ronin. It's times like that when I wish I could understand Japanese.

Hmm. Grey's Anatomy. *tsk* So you're telling me talking calmly with a woman who's been in labor for a crapload of time will make her capable of delivering vaginally. Did y'all even check the heart monitors on the baby? Good gravy. And *where are the nurses*??!?!

Flicking back and forth between Grey's and the Winter Olympics. Pissed I missed Shaun White's first run as I know he half-asses his second. I had to flick off of Grey's, classwork be damned. Sappy songs? Fade to whites to love interests? Ye Gods. And I knew that was going to happen (you know what I'm talking about). If it didn't I was going to be pissed off. At least Christina Ricci's hot in this.

It's always interesting to hear phone posts from people on my FL. Somehow the voices are never how I expect them. Lower, richer, more mature. I think it's cool. I'm also jealous, as I have the voice of a young kid (IMO).

Worst. Hospital. Ever. They took Grey to the shower? After that, shouldn't she be getting assessed for internal injury, shrapnel, something? Never again with this show or anything of its ilk.

Can't believe some of you wonderful folk think I'm mature. ::giggles and plays with her stuffed Elmo:: That certainly was interesting. Introversion isn't one of the first six qualities that comes to mind when you think of fredericks? I guess that's a good thing.

Thing is, I'm not even sure if it's a translation thing or a subtlety issue. I guess that adds to the hilarity.

No, it's not a bad thing. Hells, I like...uhm...lots of crap that isn't realistic in the least. I was just bitter because my stomach was hurting and I had no idea who was who. And I hate when everyone on these shows are all well-rested looking and dewy-eyed.

Yeah, I had never watched it before, and it was only Candyce's second time seeing it, so we were all like, eh? Who? But I have a more willing suspension of disbelief now than I used to, thanks to Japan. Haha.

I never got around to watching Grey's Anatomy. Surprising, too, because I'm big into medical studies and House MD is one of my favorite shows.

My phone posts tend to be very boring. I just end up rambling about anything that comes into my mind and I usually don't make any sense. :P

Grey's strikes me as really quirky. I guess it's easy to like if you're into those things. I just don't like medical dramas/series/what have you. I find myself picking things about and snarking and I can do that while enjoying myself.

Phone posts are rambly by their very nature. I hate them because I don't have the added time to edit what I want to say so it's somewhat interesting. I've actually only done one and it didn't turn out audible. I figure if I get bored enough I'll give it a shot.

*grin* Don't let you hear my instructor hear you say that. MASH has great depiction of medics, not so much of nurses. Hot Lips, anyone? But the assignment's for current shows anyway.

Oh no...the depiction of how much the nurses contribute is pretty clear. Sure it focuses on the main medics...but especially in the later seasons, Hot Lips actually becomes more Margaret and morphs into a very real depiction of a woman nurse in combat. The medics are constantly saying on there how they couldn't do it without the nurses.

I haven't seen Grey's Anatomy at all...so I can't really say who is a nurse on there...it seemed more of a steamy soap from the previews than a medical drama. Of course, I could be totally wrong, but the promos for it when it debuted sounded like it.

Yeah, I always wonder what the real professionals think of shows like Grey's Anatomy and CSI. I was just wondering last night if there's a huge gludge of people wanting to get into law school or police academy due to watching shows like CSI and Law and Order and wanting to be one of those guys that just walks into the crime scene and is like "Okay, the guy walked into here, took a gun from here, shot this guy there, and then ran out here. I know this because I HAVE STUDIED THE GUY'S PROFILE EXTENSIVELY AND I KNOW HIS LIFE AND EVERYTHING ABOUT HIM." I figured there really isn't a demand for those kind of guys, career-speaking.

I dunno, maybe it's a good thing that, aside from Boston Public, there really aren't those kind of shows about teachers.

Funny you should mention a show like CSI - when I spoke to the Chemistry Chair he said there been a huge increase in the number of forensic science majors in my school during the last five years. It's the most popular career choice at the moment. I'm sure a lot of it has to do with everything that's happened post 9/11 with the increased demand for investigative workers, but shows like CSI and the crime investigative stuff also hit their stride after 9/11 and we all know what a big influence TV has on kids.

You should hear my Constitutional Law professor go on about "Law & Order." She complains about it pretty much every chance she gets. I guess it's a good thing I took her class, 'cause that show was making law school look like a good idea to me.

Well, if you need a break from bad medical dramas, you can always watch Scrubs. It's still one of my favorite shows--probably horribly inaccurate as far as the hospital stuff, but it is a comedy, so that's forgiveable. Also, it's damn funny.

Out of curiosity, does it have to be fictional shows? 'Cause it might be interesting to watch one of those "real life" medical shows and see how the nurses are portrayed for the reality audience.

I watched one episode of Greys and that's enough for me. :) I do like Scrubs. The wacky humor is a favorite of mine. I miss it now that my schedule makes catching it on impossible.

Right now we're focusing on fictional shows. I was thinking of bring up the "real life" medical shows they show on Discovery Health of whatever tomorrow as well, now that you mentioned it. Nurses don't get much attention on them, simply because the job tends to be less in-your-face. I do remember they had a RL show that followed nurses around called "Nurses" (makes sense, huh?) I think it was on for 10 airings or so before disappearing. I'll ask about it.

So did you like it? Cause I love it. I mean, a really unhealthy obsessive love, but love it is.

And btw, the nurses just got off strike. The Chief of Surgery was making them work mandatory overtime and they went on strike. But yeah, the show mostly resolve around the doctors. They do have the 5 or 6 nurses/tech people that you see all the time, but its about the interns.

We talked about the strike. I don't watch the show, btw (is it obvious?); I started the class a week late and one of the assignments was to watch the strike episode of Grey's. The problem expressed was that the nurses were given peripheral roles and the actual coverage of the strike was given lip service (some of the students were particularly upset over the fact that the nurses had to get one of the residents to act as their spokesperson as if nurses can't speak for themselves). Nurses don't work for doctors - they work with them. A Chief of Surgery isn't going to hire you when you get out of school but a Director of Nursing is, and so the scenario was not realistic. The language used we also touched upon - the CoS referred to the nurses in the possessive when, again, he's not their boss and they don't work *under* him. And then the show went from showing bits and pieces of a nursing strike and calling them invaluable to the operations of a hospital (which we are) to completely ignoring them in subsequent weeks. Sure the shows about the interns but you've been in clinical - you know the interns end up asking the nurses for advice all the time when they don't know how to do a procedure. Meh.

I didn't particularly like the show because I'm not a fan of the drama/"RL" stuff. Aside from the Discovery Health shows the only medical tv program I watch is Scrubs, and that has minimal medical information.

PPS - Some kid is interviewing Patrick Dempsey for my school newspaper this week. It's a phone interview, but he's listed as being a character on Grey's Anatomy. I couldn't help but wish I was a fangirl or something so I could snag it.
