Some things that have conspired to make me happy over the last couple of days:

1. (Non-sexual completely platonic) sleepovers for grown-ups.
2. "Yo, assholes, this motherfucker's dead! There ain't no Criss Angel 'Mindfreak', David Blaine trapdoor horseshit jumpin' off here!" (tell me some of y'all have seen this already)
3. The photo snapped of Tunisian Olympian Azza Besbes that can be found here, in The Moments gallery. I want a large print of that picture asap.
4. Planning for Dragon*Con. Vacation! Finally!
5. Knowing where I'm going to work after I return from Dragon*Con. Change sucks, but at least things won't catch me unawares. Hopefully.
6. Meeting a friend for ten minutes completely by surprise and remembering all over again why she makes you a better person and how lucky you are to have her in your life.
7. Thinking back on the college years, and being stoked about revisiting campus for Homecoming Weekend. God, I'm one of *those* people.
8. The weekend! Yayz!

I started watching SG-1 with [livejournal.com profile] atraxia, and I like it? I guess. I'd caught a couple of episodes later on in the run and I enjoyed them without really being familiar with canon so I know things pick up, but the pilot is really quite bad, full of pointless momentum-halting verbal exposition and little real action to speak of. We got six or seven episodes in, and I know I'm going to force myself to finish up watching as much as I can (Amazon had a Buy 1, Get 1 sale going on SG-1 and I bought up to S8 because I have faith in these things and because I'm a fool at times), but I hope things improve quickly. Daniel Jackson, though? Hot from the get-go. Hello!

Three workdays left. Whoo! And there are fanfic panels Friday night that I'm ridiculously excited about. Joy.

Season 1 is sorta corny, but trust me, the show does get better. A lot better. Then it falls off. Personally, they should have ended it after 8th season. There's some good episodes in the last 2 seasons, but overall it's a pale imitation of what it had been.

Pooh on Amazon's buy one get one free sale...they jacked up the price of most of the Stargates to almost $40. Even with the sale they're $20 a piece.....I can get em for that at Wal Mart. :)

I figured as much. I think I was expecting something like BSG or Atlantis, where the pilots really sucked me in. If I was just flipping channels and happened upon SG-1's pilot episode I wouldn't stick through until the end. I'm glad you're vouching for improvement.

I figured out buying it on the sale and getting the entire shebang at Bestbuy were about the same, pricewise. And this way I can be lazy about the whole thing.

Remind me, how much of Atlantis have you seen? Cause, while there's not a ton of continuity between the two, there's been more the last few seasons (of Atlantis), enough such that I can't imagine not having seen SG-1 before and understanding what was going on. Especially last season.

Quite a bit of Atlantis. I watched the first three seasons fairly religiously, but things have fallen off a bit (it really did peak in the middle of season 2) and I just keep up with summaries now and then. I know it's been bringing up a lot of SG-1's storylines since that show bit the big one, but I'm okay with working with vague outlines as long as the plot's not bogged down by lots of exposition. Figuring out things as I go along.

Atlantis has only really hooked itself to the Replicator storyline from SG-1, and even there it charted its own path. I think there was one Goa'uld moment in season 3 or so, but it hasn't really touched on the Ori despite the connection to the Ancients/Alterans -- IIRC the SG-1/Atlantis connection in that regard happened in SG-1. Continuum is only referenced briefly in the season 5 opener, as Carter is heading back to Earth so she can go off and witness Ba'al's extraction.

I like SG-1 a lot -- much more so than Atlantis -- but the pilot sort of takes after the original movie, only with a little more actual movement from O'Neill (Kurt Russell's O'Neil in the original movie -- only one "L" -- is one of the least active action heroes I've ever seen.) I'm given to udnerstand that the pilot is being re-edited and given new effects shots and should be much improved eventually.

Season 1 is bumpy, and doesn't really get traction until close to halfway through -- although the really bad episode of the season goes by with episode 3 (the Mongol Sam Dress-up Episode.) Season 2 is better, but season 3 is where things really kick up a fair few notches, and they stay pretty much running smoothly until season six, which is where they spent so much time trying to sell everyone Jonas Quinn that the rest of the show took a hit.

I liked seasons 9 and 10 as well, but I like Claudia Black, so I guess I'm biased (I also like Ben Browder.) the two post-series movies serve to tie up dangling threads and aren't really essential -- and Continuum replays "Moebius," essentially; that was the season 8 closer, and originally meant as the series finale...until they got renewed again.

I saw and hearted Tropic Thunder. Definitely liked the trailers best - I want to see a Spider-Man/ Iron Man slash movie.

I laughed my *ass* off when I saw that trailer. The fondling of the rosary? BRILLIANT! "MTV 'Best Kiss' Winner Tobey Maguire"! Win! And I too am dreaming of slashy crossovers. :)

SG-1 was my first fandom, so I may be a bit biased when I say "it gets better." The 'verse gets more involved and complex as the series progresses, which is what I loved about it (the fact that non-fans have no clue what's going on gives me warm, in-crowd feelings).

It's good you only bought through S8 - as far as I'm concerned, the series ended then, and the next two seasons are just bad fanfic.

I figured as much. The episodes I'd managed to catch further on in the seasons were pretty good for the most part. I was just startled by how *hokey* the pilot came across.

And I remember the fandom warbling when s8 ended, so I figured going beyond that at the moment wouldn't be prudent. :)
