Watched X-Men: First Class this evening. I caught a lot of positive reviews from fans and so was expecting a better movie than I found myself sitting through. The plague of bad acting (I'm looking at you, January Jones and Zoe Kravitz), heavy-handed writing (the invention of the code names was pretty lazy writing, fo serious), the weird choices for X-history revision (I was never a fan of the newer Emma Frost, and what was with the whole Mystique/Xavier thing?) and the occasional shoddy CGI aside, it wasn't a bottle of Awesomesauce, but it did make for a fun film experience. And Erik/Xavier? Shyeah, I'm on that boat. No doubt, homies. The guy who played Erik rocked that turtleneck, blazer, and shades look like no one's bidness. Caliente!

I haven't seen it yet and I plan too, but I'm still struggling with the fact that Alex was younger brother and yet Alex is in the past and Scott is current. Makes no sense!

Yes. That was one thing where I was like "huh??" It almost made it seem like Alex was Scott's dad, which was an odd choice. Then they made the Hellfire Club less of a Freemason behind the scene scheming society and more overt with an actual political agenda. I distinctly remember Sebastian Shaw *not* wanting to get his hands dirty unless forced. Shaw as the big baddie and catalyst of Magneto? Wow.

More fannish wtfery on my part:
1. having feline-like Hank as the original furry mutant. I wasn't a fan of that revamp in the comics either. Was he like that in the 3rd movie (never watched it)?

2. Having Nightcrawler's dad was cool, however I kept expecting him and Mystique to fall into lust. But I suppose that was for the best, because Magneto/Mystique had distinct pedophile vibes.

3. Moira MacTaggert as a US citizen? A G-(wo)man, no less. Uhm, okay.

4. Random axillary characters are random. And sort of pointless. But whatever.

The Wolverine cameo? GOLDEN.

Thanks for all the interesting info. I'll have to keep an eye out for it and then make my own comments when I watch it!

I'm sorry! I completely skipped over the beginning of your comment where you clearly mention you've yet to see the movie, and decided to discuss parts of the movie. Gah. Sorry. Sorry. Sorry.

Oh I didn't think it was that great of a movie....but omg Erik/Charles made it a BILLION times better. I think everyones so high on them that they're inflating the goodness of the movie.

DUDE. My friend and I kept giggling throughout, because their dialogue seemed *so* innuendo-laden I was expecting there to be a post-credit snippet of the two of them floating off into the sunset on a handicap-accessible boat.

Yeah, I agree. I was disappointed. They rewrote so many histories, but then they kill off the token black guy? Ugh.

I don't usually ship, and I thought the Xavier/Erik thing was really blatant.

but then they kill off the token black guy

That really ticked me off.

Especially since he was getting slashy with Alex.

Josh tells me Darwin really did die in the comics. But I somehow doubt he died before he'd even gotten his chance to be tested in combat.

And why do they get to hide behind "We're being true to the comics!" when they changed so many other things around?

I understand someone had to die in that scene, but did it really have to be the token black guy?

And not only did he die, but they played the mournful strings and dragged his death scene out. We barely knew anything about the guy besides he drove a cab before Prof X and Magneto recruited him and he had a vague adaptation power...that obviously wasn't all that effective. Token or no, I didn't care that he'd died.

Yeah. He'd been in basically one scene. The viewer didn't even know who he was. His attempt to save Angel was noble, and all, but that was barely a blip on the screen, compared to all the time spent exploring Erik's, Raven's and Charles's angst.

Yeah, exactly. As long as you're changing stuff, avoid the damn cliche! :(

Erik/Xavier: Wet embraces and "you are not alone." Mind-meld a la Spock. Staring intensely into each other's eyes while crying manly tears. Cradling injured comrade's head in lap and nearly weeping over the injury.

*boards ship*

There was *so much* slashy dialogue. I mean, those two practically were married with a home full of adopted multiracial children. I'm pretty sure the Mystique/Erik parts were thrown in as an afterthought to het up the movie, but imo that just turned Erik into a Humbert Humbert-like creeper.

Apt icon, btw. All aboard. :)
