I was terribly terribly restless today. Not exactly certain why. I had to open up the Shack this morning, seeing as the manager had a meeting to attend. The worker who was supposed to come in at midday called in sick, so I decided to work until close and head to the movies. I just didn't want to go back home I guess. Went to see Hellboy, which I had been putting off seeing for a while for various reasons.

I should start by saying that I've read not a single Hellboy comic. I'm a Marvel bitch: oodles and oodles of X-Men, Spiderman, what have you, but not much of an indie comic nerd. But I still feel like the movie did the comic a disservice. Was it meant to be a straight-up break shit up flick? Because I felt nothing for any of the characters. Not a thing. Hellboy was given tons of one-liners to spout, which I guess are tres cool when read on a page where the hero is looking back at the reader quirkily, but gets tiresome when it happens again and again and again on the big screen. If less time had been wasted having Ron Perlman make quips like a red-horned Spidey and more time had been devoted to delving into the intricacies of HB and The Professor's relationship, or the reason why Liz and Hellboy broke up, I would have left my seat a happy camper.

And what the hell was the point of John Myer?? I mean, besides setting up a possible love-triangle that wasn't fully explored he didn't do a damned thing that any other no-named extra couldn't have done. And the Nazis. The Nazis. It's always Nazis. I couldn't contain a snort of contempt at that reveal. I know they were fucked up, but do they have to be the jumping point of evil in every film? Least the inclusion of Rasputin made things a little different.

I found myself fond of the David Hyde Pierce-voiced Abe, but only because DHP is a favorite of mine. The only time I got close to really getting enthralled while watching the film was when Abe ("Abe"; isn't that a great name for a superhero?) nearly got his ass handed to him by the hellhounds. Besides that? Pssh. The ending? With Hellboy bringing Liz back from her soul-less state with a threat laced with his love for her? Can you say "anti-climactic"? Because I can. Right after I say "goddamn, that was a waste".

Eh. My biggest gripe? No character development. I guess all (modern) superhero movies are like that. Thing is, I know all about the origins of the X-Men and Spiderman. I didn't need the movies to spell out why Storm went all psycho after getting thrown down the elevator shaft, or why Spiderman lived with his aunt and uncle. But now I know how those people that went in blind might have felt.

Meh. It wasn't that bad. I just expected more. Call me crazy.

Coming back I was kindly informed by the billboard at the bus stop to "Get Folked". I'm thinking I might listen to that before I head to bed. Or just wander the show sites before I call it a night.
