What's "a-wassailing'"? Is it legal?
Dec. 26th, 2005 12:35 amMe = pooped. It hasn't been a long day in terms of housework, but everything's dragged. I got more gifts than that rather atrocious faux albino alligator skin purse. My brother gave me the organizer I'd been pestering him for in addition to a $60 gift card to the mall which I intend to use on workout clothes and perhaps a new pair of sneakers. He also bought gifts for all of us "kids" - the new Dance Dance game and Mario Party 7. We played both this morning and into the afternoon. It's been a while since I've played Dance Dance and I'm rather disappointed in how non-coordinated I seem to be at the present. The song selection in Extreme 2 is weak (IMO - I am a fan of the idiotic Japanese Pop that was found in abundance on the other DDs) but it's still rather fun. Got an American Express Gift Check from my aunt...the amount was small enough that I don't understand why she didn't simply give me cash. The check looks fancy enough but I suppose it's the same mindset that moves people to give gift cards instead of the cash equivalent.
Tomorrow I'll be trekking over to Brooklyn to babysit my cousin and hopefully make enough money to purchase my Pathophysiology textbook. A couple of acquaintances want to get together and "review" the entire Patho textbook before school begins again. We've split it so everyone must read four chapters of the book, coming up to 300 pages I believe. Normally that's nothing for me, but then we have to make review sheets on the material for the other people...wtf. This is what I get for working with young women coming directly from the Chinese school system. "Hardcore" is a damn understatement. They also have this compulsion to have everyone in the group come to an agreement about what we should do (influences of a communist state much?), something that slightly aggravated me. We had a conference call a couple of days ago and it was discussion about things that, really, could have been taken care of in less than the hour I spent on my cellphone. I also felt like I was hampering their style in that all of the women spoke Chinese and could have conversed easier in that language...except they spoke English in deference to me being on the line. Towards the end I was so impatient to be off the phone that I agreed to whatever point I was being asked about. Lord knows what I said "yes" to once the 50 minute mark hit.
I've had time to read, although I still (STILL!) haven't finished Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell *sigh*. I've made my way through most of Live from New York, the book on the history of Saturday Night Live that's made up of interviews from cast past and present, as well as a few hosts. I don't watch the show anymore as I haven't found it funny since the early part of college (although the "Chroni-WHAT-cles of Narnia" bit that's been making the round on the web makes me laugh damn near every time I come across it), but it's eye-opening to get all the inside info on what went down. On the GN front I've been reading Bill Willington's "Fables" series. I've only gotten through book 1 and I'm a little way into book 2. I can't help but think the man owes an awful lot to Gaiman. All of the characters strike me as creatures that would populate The Dreaming. It's "meh" so far. I hear it has a pretty loyal following though, so I hope it improves as it goes along. I feel moved to re-visit The Vampire Chronicles when I'm done but I know Strange comes first.
Rainy Christmas, but still a pretty lovely one overall. 364 days like this and I'd have absolutely no complaints.
Oh, who am I kidding?
