fredericks: (Being Veep is hard work *snore*)

I have lots of reading to do for class but I find my nose in Anansi Boys. Last semester I did very little reading/studying for classes and did pretty well, and it's hard to stop being lazy when you haven't yet had to deal with serious repercussions.

And...I'm so frakking bored it's driving me crazy. Cleaning can only carry a person so far.

I started with Anansi Boys last night, and looking at the page that Neil signed cued a weird dream later on. One that involved me meeting Robert Plant at a signing. We had a semi-long one-sided conversation that involved me gushing over Led Zeppelin and him listening politely ([livejournal.com profile] fredericks: "I really love your work, particularly the acoustic stuff", R. Plant: "A-huh, is that right?", etc etc) then I pulled out my CD player for him to sign since I had no Led albums on me. He made a sketch of a psychedelic tree and then handed it back to me. Only thing "it" had morphed into the case Baltar had used to ship the nuke over to Gina in the Epiphanies episode of BSG. Then I started worrying about how I was going to explain to Ron Moore how I had to take the case without ruining the plot of BSG...basically the dream got weirder and stupider.

Now I'm going to slowly walk away from LJ.

What do you think of Anansi Boys? I've yet to read it.

Have you read American Gods? If you have, don't go into Anansi Boys expecting the same kind of epic feel. AB has a more laid back writing style, a lot more humorous, and so when bad things go down they don't really have as much as an impact...? I think that's the word I want to say. It's a fun little read. I found the island references immensely amusing, and I liked that all the protagists were different from the norm. It's good, and it's funny, but it doesn't leave you thinking like AG. But, hey - sometimes a person just wants some candy.

i would love to make a film of american gods. this has a lot to do with how problematic i find the book, though.

my boyfriend read anansi boys and was trying to get it added to the ALA's notable book list. apparently he was the only person on the committee who picked up on the protagonist's race. weird!

You found American Gods problematic how? And how'd you go about correcting those problems on film?

apparently he was the only person on the committee who picked up on the protagonist's race. weird!
Neil mentioned that that happened a lot. I also found it funny that at a bulletin board I came across people were debating Daisy's ethnicity, when the book clearly states her mother was Ethiopian and her dad was from Hong Kong. Silly people.
