I woke up with an eye not working properly. I hate when things dysfunction overnight. I figure I either bumped it on my window still or a stray hair decided to pop in and say hello. Either way I'm not thrilled about the occasional nostril and eye water leakage or the somewhat more constant eyeball irritation. I really like seeing things. But - admire my mad one and one-third of an eye utilizing LJ entry-making skills.

Clinicals this week weren't as bad as I'd expected. At Peds on Monday I got to see my first vaginal birth. "Wow" would be understating the matter. It wasn't a visually traumatic experience, but...new life comes from where now? I went through a good bit of the subsequent two days contemplating the fact that a good bulk of the people I ran across had been squeezed out of some woman's vagina. It's imagery that kills anger really fast. It was such a shame the resident who ended up taking over the birth was so incompetent. Not life-threatening so (perhaps?) but the guy had no people skills and no finesse at all. And he annoyed the shit out of me, so there's that. No drama on my end of things during Med-Surg, although one of my classmates stuck herself with a needle after giving her patient a shot of heparin. Per hospital policy she has to do the drug regimen for six months. I feel for her. She's had a rough semester so far.

I'm so damned happy it's Friday. I was barely hanging on by the time Wednesday evening rolled around, and I'm pretty sure I had a grand total of 8 hours of sleep over the previous three days. When I came in last night I tidied up my room and popped in "Angels in America". Good times.

Speaking of the movie, I have to do a response on it for my Nursing in the Media class. I keep dragging my feet on it, I HAVE been doing that for the last two weeks. I have until 10 tonight to post something and then respond to my classmate's responses. I was gung-ho on the internet discussion thing before, but my classmates have proven very...I want to say...? I don't know, they don't know how to engender discussion online. People's responses tend to be about superficial points of a work and it's almost impossible to respond to things like that with an insightful comment. Or if you do respond no one will respond to your inquiry. Meh. I just want to discuss it in class next week. I'll put some crap up and see what the professors say.

I mentioned a couple of posts back that I was going to a screening of Aquamarine courtesy of the school newspaper. Well, I went. It wasn't as bad as I had thought initially. I went in expecting the experience to be comparable to having my eyes used as pincushions, and it ended up being akin to getting occasionally kicked in the ribs by someone with steel-toed boots. My notes contain lots of "oh my God"s. If you have young children in the target age of this flick (and I think there are only two of you on my FL) please rent something like The Iron Giant for them to see: something good, something with a real message, something with heart. What's sad it that the movie had a few flickers of cleverness but then they'd kill the moment by making everything stupid again. What's sadder is that I probably would have loved watching a movie like Aquamarine when I was in the 5th grade. The audience was full of young school kids that might have been bussed in? who knows. They seemed to enjoy themselves. There was one critic (?) sitting ahead of me who spent a good bit of time before the movie talking to one of his friends about a particularly hairy vagina he'd run across, and I wish to God I could say I was joking about that. I suppose the grown men who'd actually come to watch a movie like Aquamarine would be special in their own way.

Oh, and I got a "press kit", consisting of a DVD promotional pack. Jarhead's press kit was so much more impressive. Of course, that might just be because it had Mssr. Gyllenhaal's mug plastered all over its glossy pages.

Imma attempt to do something productive besides watching Press Your Luck.

Wow, the miracle of birth. Great, inspiring thing to watch. Kinda scary too when you think..."Um, is that going to happen to me one day?"

I'm glad that hospital has a drug regemine for biohazard exposures. The hospital I worked at...no. I had three incidents of blood exposures and all I got was a blood test to see if I was HIV positive or not. I don't know why that particular thing isn't manditory for all places that will possibly have a bioharzard exposure.

Wow, hope your eye gets better soon. Hate that you're working at 1/3 power there.

Jarhead...I wanna see that movie.

Why be productive when procrastination is so much more fun?

I didn't find that thought of having a child scary. I like to deal in steps, you see. :) Just...you can use that thing again after your kid comes out? I mean, goddamn!

Wow. Blood exposure? as in a needle stick? When did that happen? I know regulatory organizations have become pretty strict with what you have to do when it comes to dealing with workplace precautions. You could have totally sued the hospital if it happened recently.

Jarhead's a very interesting movie. I was surprised I liked it so much, as I'm not much into war flicks.

*grin* I'm sort of still procrastinating, as I have to make comments or somesuch on people's posts and I just don't want to. I'm feeling soooooooo lazy today.

Well, I kinda got this thing about pain. A little is ok, but childbrith pain? Uh...no. I'll pass thank you. Ok, else, give me that epidural, stat! What I understand is that, once you do have a kid vaginally, I don't think it ever goes back to the same size it was. That's just what I hear, I don't have anything to back that up. I can see why though they say it's like trying to push something the size of a watermelon through something the size of a lemon.

Yes, needle stick, all three times. It happened while I worked there between '99 and '03. Stupid ass surgeons throwing dirty needles around and not paying attention. I know, even then, some hospitals would give anti-virals when staff had blood exposures. Not my hospital. You got the inital test the day of exposure, one at 6 months, then one at a year. After that they didn't check any more. It didn't help either that, if you got stuck in the middle of surgery all you had time for was to strip off the glove, pour iodine on the puncture and put another glove on.

I'm all about the procrastination. It's my middle name.

And I hear ya on the eye disfunction annoyance. My eye still won't stop twitching, so I've taken to squeezing that eye shut about 25% of the day.

Even more fun is when BOTH your eyes are disfunctioning and you believe yourself to be going blind and then you realize, "Oh, my contacts have been on the wrong eyes all morning! Hallelujah!"

I'm guessing that happened to you. :)

And I was completely thinkng about adult faces emerging. It's a damned laugh riot. *grin*

Yeah, seeing a live birth sure does make you think. The only time I've seen one was this one video I was watching for, curiously enough, a poetry class. It was like, this little baby's head started poking out of something and it was all bloody and I couldn't figure out what was going on, then I saw all the, you know, hair and parts and everything and I was like "Oh, okay, it's coming out of that." Needless to say I didn't look at porn again for at least another 24 hours. Hopefully the only time I will see a live birth for a very long time.

Poetry class? Wow. You must have had one of those straight-out-of-grad-school or in-grad-school teachers who was tryingto impress something upon you all.

Bwah!! Lovely. :)
I sat down with my legs squeezed together for quite a while after all was said and done.

No, actually Dr. Morgan was one of the more senior faculty there. It was on a video about some modernist American poet or something like that--Ezra Pound or something. Believe me, I have had some bizzare literature classes. In my Harry Potter class we actually talked about queer literature theory, and the homo/heteosexual triangle between Ron, Harry, and Hermione. I'm sure a lot of Harry Potter fanfic writers would've benefited from that class.
