Mother is...cheerful today (and I feel so very Norman Bates-y while saying that) and it's thrown me for a bit of a loop. She managed to mention something I should be doing without nagging me about it and, for once, I gathered enough motivation to get up and do shit.

There's a job fair tomorrow in Manhattan I plan to attend, and I have to retool my resume accordingly. It is rather sparse and the jobs that are there are somewhat unsubstantial (Radioshack, anyone?) but I'm hoping my tabula rasa state and utter desperation is appealing to the recruiters I'll find out there. I got permission to take the Boards last week but now I'm stuck scrambling for valid ID: they don't take Learners Permit (and even if they did I'd be SOL as mine expired on my last birthday) and my passport was done six years ago. This means I have to ask the folks for $40 to get passport photos and enough money to cover the expedited passport renewal (money has trickled down onto me recently, to the point where I now have $97 dollars in my possession; fear me!), then run over to the post office and drop everything off. If all goes well I should be able to sit for the exam in three weeks. Course, that means tomorrow only the recruiters who hire on permit will take me seriously. At this point? Anyone who gives me a second glance is getting some action.

Weekend was craziness and I keep opening up LJ to post about it but I get tired just looking at the white page. Maybe after prepping for tomorrow I'll find the motivation.

One of my profs wants me to come by the school and talk with the new class about my papers. My ego won't allow me to do it until I'm employed somewhere, just as I don't think I'll be keen on interviewing students for Brown until I can say I'm affiliated with a hospital and have a couple of cards available. Loserville, I tell you.

Would you work at Bellevue? Or are you looking for something smaller? It's been mentioned in the book that I've been reading about Cook County Hospital.

Good luck at the job fair, and on getting a Valid ID (the whole idea of the Valid ID seems strange when I think [too much] about it), ...and good luck for the boards.

Bellevue's one of the city hospitals. I guess I wouldn't be *adverse* to working there, but from my stint of clinicals in one of the city's hospitals those places, for the most part, are depressing as hell: outdated machinery, dismal-looking facilities, and a few staffing issues. I don't think I can take that for my first permanent nursing gig. What's your book titled/about?

The book is called 'Hospital'. It's by Sydney Lewis, and it's an oral history of Cook County Hospital (the only public hospital in Cook County, IL) from the early 90's. To give you an idea about it: it took me over 8 hours to be seen by a dr (resident) from the time I got in line for intake (I had an appendicitis). And then after spending about 20 minutes in the exam room, I was wheeled into the hallway on a bed--where I spent approx. the next 12-15 hours (ish) waiting to get into surgery. Not horrible, but--let's just say that part of the reason it took so long was that gunshot victims were triaged above me (and with obvious reason).
