Gaiman talks about how time changes authors and their works in his blog, quoting G.K. I had no clue Cerebus was laid out over such a long time. Makes sense, though. I don't think my issue with the series necessarily traces back to changes in the author's state of mind, but with the way in which Sim decided to show it on the page. I'm pretty sure I recall pages of Church and State that consist of Cerebus standing still while huge bubbles of dialogue condemning organized religion hang around him. At that point you've left the venue of comic/graphic novel and should just start with the novelization. Don't get me wrong, I *liked* that our favorite anthropomorphized aardvark wasn't just swinging his sword and rescuing maidens, but the line between work of fiction and author's mouthpiece/soapbox got blurred beyond all recognition.

Oddly, I have a Cerebus-as-librarian sketch. Felt vaguely like a traitor to the gender until I'd picked it up (Ken had made the request while I was working) - and Dave was very much the gentleman.

So yeah, mystified.

And the first thing I think? "That must be *adorable*". Tell me he has the broadsword strapped on as well.

Funny enough, Cerebus's misogynistic tendencies I could brush off as in-character. He certainly got his heart stomped on enough. If there was a page and a half of ranting against women I would have thrown the book against the wall sooner than I did (I think I made it a little more than 3/4 through the series; maybe I missed all the really offensive stuff).

This NaNo thing and I are already falling out. Not good.
