Revelry and merrymaking
Oct. 10th, 2009 10:25 pmMom's birthday was this past Friday, and since we both had the day off I planned to take her trekking around Manhattan in the morning/afternoon before the entire family headed out to dinner in the evening. My aunt (mom's twin) happened to be off as well, so we brought her and her daughter along to see Good Hair at the Union Square Regal Theatre. Good Hair was quite funny, but also enlightening in regards to touching on the black hair industry. I ended up patting myself on the back as well left, because it was definitely a great mother/daughter pick. We then milled around the Union Square Farmer's Market before heading down to Delancy Street and BabyCakes Bakery for some agave-sweetened cupcakes (my mother's diabetic and prefers to use agave if she indulges, so I figured it was a neat choice). When we got back to Queens we went to out favorite Thai restaurant for dinner. We didn't cut cake until this evening when mom prepped a big dinner for all my aunts and cousins, but as mom was adamant that we not light candles (she tried to stop us from singing "Happy Birthday" but it was like she couldn't stop the signal) things worked out well.
Mom and I have our moments, and Lord knows we're all horrible when it comes to vocalizing emotions, but she's still a good mother and overall well-meaning person and I know I'm lucky to have her in my life. So, yes. Good times.
I'm stoked about heading to Canada (eh!) in January. On one hand, it's Canada! On the other hand, it's Canada. But the company should be fun. Just have to make sure my passport is not expired.
Not so stoked about work on Monday. Or that I have to work this weekend. Working as a float during the weekdays is okay, but on the weekends I'm usually stuck seeing anywhere from 6 to 10 patients a day up and down the West Side. We're talking 10-12 hour day on Saturday easy, with Sunday usually clocking in at 10 hours if I've managed to get my shit together. I hope we're overstaffed and they ask me to take off. ::fingers crossed::
