Why is it that when people ask you to "listen to them" they really just want you to do what the hell they want? It's my problem, my life, my decision. There's no *right* decision, so don't think your input is the "correct way". If you're looking for compliance tell me that from jump so I can curse you out and be on my way.

Oh, God, YES. I wish I had the balls to tell my superiors at work this, because they could really stand to hear it.

Well, if it's your supervisors telling you this, and it's regarding something job-related, "listen to me" really means "bow before me and obey, peon". But I'm thinking if you're sharing some personal relationship they've already crossed into the acquaintance-zone and so you can tell them you don't really need their advice. It'll get them scuttling back across to the boss zone, but it'll pay dividends in the end.

Nah, I'm still the peon and they're still the supervisor. But, um, when/if I ever do get that fancy office job that's hypothetical at this point but very much vyed for in my mind, I might consider growing some cohones when I turn in my badge and letting them know what I think of some of their lesser-endearing managerial tendencies.
