For those planning on doing taxes
Feb. 5th, 2005 11:38 amYou don't have to shill out money to a firm (or "firm", in the case of places like Sucker Tax Service) to do your taxes for you if you made less than $35,000 last year. Free filing is available via links from the the IRS site (I used the TurboTax program there myself). Doing the state form on any of those free programs costs money, so if you're obligated to file a state form you can go to another Turbo Tax site and you can do both in one blow. For free. Doesn't get better than that.
Even if you don't think you're going to get money back if you've earned income, you're 25 or older, and you've made less than the above mentioned $35,000 (and you do not plan on filing "married filing separate") you'll most likely qualify for Earned Income Credit (EIC - aka "manna from Washington D.C.")The additions rules for qualifying for EIC can be found here.
