PROVIDENCE -- A motorcyclist was badly injured when a Brown University senior who was allegedly driving drunk collided with him on College Hill yesterday.
Kenneth Ortiz, 32, of Providence, suffered broken bones and a fractured skull from the collision. He underwent hours of emergency surgery yesterday and was listed in fair condition at the trauma intensive care unit at Rhode Island Hospital yesterday afternoon. His new gold Suzuki motorcycle, just delivered three weeks ago, was destroyed. The police said Ortiz wasn't wearing a helmet.
The student, who the police said had just left a graduation party, ended up with minor cuts and a bloody nose. He was held at the hospital until his blood-alcohol level dropped, according to the police. He was wearing a seatbelt, the police said.
The 23-year-old Jamestown man may face serious felony charges.
Due to the severity of the accident, Police Sgt. Steven Woodruff said the case may be brought before a grand jury. The police are seeking to charge the Jamestown man with driving under the influence with personal injury, driving to endanger with personal injury, and several motor vehicle violations. (The driver's name is withheld due to The Journal's policy of not naming suspects until they are charged.)
The student, who is expected to graduate Monday, had left a party in the area of Meeting Street and Brown Street sometime after midnight, the police said.
A public safety officer for the Rhode Island School of Design, who happened to drive behind him, told the police that he saw the vehicle weaving on the road and driving past a stop sign and through two red traffic lights.
The student drove east on Waterman Street, where Ortiz was riding his motorcycle on Brook Street and approaching the intersection. Ortiz tried to stop, the police said, but the student didn't hit the brakes.
They collided. Ortiz flew off the bike, landing on the student's car, which slammed into a stone wall outside Citizen Bank and rolled over, the police said. His motorcycle skidded across Waterman Street.
