Spring's here, green stuff abounds. There's something about walking outside and seeing the apple tree in the backyard budding that lifts my spirit in the morning. The early warmth coupled with a quick frost left the tree bare last year, but I look forward to seeing the Japanese apples all over the place come summer...along with the droves of squirrels that love to feast on them. My father made it his mission to try to thwart the squirrel's raid on the tree's bounty last year (I don't know why, as the apples tend to be overly tart and they go to waste more often than not), and my brothers and I amused ourselves by seeing how the rats with puffy cheeks and broad tails evaded dad's every intervention (most hilarious thing I witnessed: dad throwing a fallen apple at a squirrel who'd plucked a nearly ripe one from the tree to nibble on, missing, with the apple landing in the squirrel's vicinity, at which point the squirrel abandoned its apple and started eating the apple provided by dad).

Middle bro came down from college for Easter, and yesterday I took the two younger ones out to lunch (Les Halles - food not as good as last time, and definitely NOT the venue for two hungry six-plus foot defensive line football players), dessert (Juniors - cannot make yellow cake, next time will stick with the overhyped cheesecake), and a movie (I Love You, Man - my opinion coincides with the Filthy Critic on this one, the plot was contrived but I laughed a good bit, many comedic actors I like had roles in the movie, and omg PAUL RUDD LOVE).

I'm continuing to slowly make my way through Butcher's Codex Alera series. Currently I'm up to book three. It remains entertaining with writing that occasionally skirts the clunky line. Still like the protagonist, but what Butcher's narration seems to view as novel forethought and diplomatic skill on the part of young Tavi I continue to view as plain old common sense, something that simply illustrates idiocy on the part of Tavi's society. And, really now, if I have to read that Tavi's voice "ring[s] out in a strident tone" or something to that effect one more time I might just use extra force to turn to the next page (that'll show 'em!) . I used up my B&N gift card to get all of the Codex books through five, as well as the new Dresden book and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Totally backlogged on the reading.

Working this weekend, which is always fun (::releases sarcasm button::). My search for a therapist will have to wait until my first off-day the following week, which I really (really really really) hope is Monday. I don't think I can pull off 10 straight 10-12 hour work days with my sanity intact (current status: artfully tattered) at this point.

In closing: Vivica A. Fox as the host of VH1's new show "Cougars". I say we all come together and donate some shame to the woman.
