Boo-boos and my trek around the City
Oct. 20th, 2003 06:11 pmOuch.
Woke up this morning with a rather large bruise on my elbow. I have no idea how I got it. Maybe when the alarm went off I started thrashing around recklessly in a sleepy yet determined effort to stop the noise and hit myself on either the window still or my desk? Who knows. I've just been having entirely too much fun poking at the bump.
Ouch.
Spent most of today running around downtown pimping myself in the hopes of finding a job. I revisited New York Presbyterian/Cornell Medical for the first time since the summer/school term from hell, and (for a wonder) wasn't too traumatized. They had more than a few lab tech jobs open that called for little to no experience outside of having a Bachelors, so I applied for a number of them. I'm hoping they call me back about it. There was a fellow there getting interviewed for one of the positions (in the Microbiology lab), so there's one gone. Four left. I passed by Sloan-Kettering, located across the street, and they really didn't have any tech jobs that interested me. They did have some listed, but they require previous experience in MSK. Why, I don't know. Bastids.
I also passed by Hunter College, in order to look into some classes. Apparently Hunter has a very good nursing program. I seem set on attending nursing school. Partly because I know there's a huge job market out there for R.N.'s (every hospital I've visited during my job search has had pages and pages of nurse openings), partly because...I don't know. I want to get into health care but I know that, at the moment, I don't have the ability to make it through med school. This is not to say that nursing school is a walk in the park by any means but I know a nurse and I feel that, from what she's told me about her experiences, I can really make it as one. When I was in the hospital the one thing that stuck with me was how kind the staff was. The doctors were the ones that woke my ass up at 6AM while on their rounds, but the nurses were the ones that I could bug at random hours and (more importantly) were the ones that administered the drugs (hmmm...Demerol...). No, I kid. But I am seriously looking into nursing school. That's why Hunter is such a viable option. It has a top-notch nursing school at a very reasonable price (after the price tag of Brown I suppose ANYTHING is reasonable), it's close to home (so I don't have to pay for housing, meals, etc), it's walking distance from New York Presbyterian (where, hopefully, I'll be able to land a part-time gig), and it's in the city (yay!).
Okay, let me take a step back. These are ALL of my possible options, as I see them:
And, those options that seem more and more choice as the days go by:
I think that's about it. I just can't afford grad school at the moment. I don't think my grades will land me a fat fellowship, and I'm unwilling to pick up oodles and oodles of loans again.
On my way to Hunter's Nursing HQ I happened to see my very first celebrity up-close. I was heading down 26th Street and I noticed a camera crew set up and a few people standing around and gawking. I stopped and looked on the hopes that they were filming a scene of Law and Order:SVU and Chris Meloni (MELONI! *squeal*) was there. Alas, it was only David Duchovny, filming something or another. Maybe a movie? I didn't bother to ask what. He's a lot geekier looking up-close. And he was wearing one of those passe goatees/beards. But otherwise he seemed really chatty with the crew and the kid that was filming with him. Thank goodness it wasn't Meloni. One glance from those steely eyes and I might have spontaneously combusted.
This entry is too long. But still not complete. Anyway, I have a tendency to count my chicks before the hen's had sex with the rooster. Everything hinges on me getting into Hunter, because I'd have to complete some courses before I get into the nursing school. And you have to be a Hunter student before you're even considered for the nursing school. And the nursing school is VERY competitive (only 80 spots a year). And the deadline for enrollment in Hunter was October 1st. Now it's rolling admissions, so my admittance depends on how fast I can get all of my stuff in. I'm hoping to get my transcript requests to Bronx Science (they require a HS transcript...why??) and Brown out by tomorrow morning. And then it's just the waiting game. Waiting for job call backs, waiting for schools, waiting for my head to explode.
Ouch.
Damn. I need to stop doing that.

Okay, let me take a step back. These are ALL of my possible options, as I see them:
- Go on to grad school for Psych immediately (Spring Semester)
- Go on to grad school in the near future, work to pay off loans in the mean time
- Start full-time at Hunter, thereby deferring loans.
- Start F/T at Hunter, work F/T (CRAZY)
- Start part/time at Hunter, work F/T: doesn't defer loans but can pay off while working (less crazy, but still taxing)
And, those options that seem more and more choice as the days go by:
- Find sugar daddy/mommy - live like pampered queen in Manhattan penthouse/Hampton townhouse
- Sell ovum on open market; negative - create spawn of me. Bad.
- Money laundering - See "Office Space", "Superman 3" (2?)
I think that's about it. I just can't afford grad school at the moment. I don't think my grades will land me a fat fellowship, and I'm unwilling to pick up oodles and oodles of loans again.

It's a good plan....
Date: 2003-10-21 12:14 am (UTC)Then find the cushiest fucking nursing job I could and start the rest of my life. But me, I'm known for being lazy.
I hope your admission rolls along smoothly!
