fredericks: (Scrubs See you there playa!)

I was waiting for the bus yesterday, gobsmacked by the hot weather (just blazin'! [oh, baby]), and I got to thinking about how the two things that'd make my wait complete would be cold glass of lemonade and Will Smith's "Summertime" cranking on a speaker. * Then I got to thinking about other songs I consider to be official summer anthems and came up with an embarrassingly short list (because my brain, it is no good). So, you know, feel free to help me out and give me some tunes I should get a hold of.

Here's a couple I could get off the top of my head:
Car Wash - Rose Royce
Miami - Will Smith
Stayin' Alive - Bee Gees
Let's Go Crazy - Prince

*Then I read the rumors that Will Smith seems to have joined the Xenu crowd and I was quite sad. Just say no, man.

"Summertime" - Ella Fitzgerald, Janis Joplin, Sublime, take your pick.

"In the Summertime" either this one:

Or the Shaggy one

THAT was what I was thinking of. One of them, anyway. Thanks for the video. :)
I've also had Hot Fun in the Summertime running through my head, but that one's just torture to listen to when you're sweating your ass off on a subway platform.

When the weather gets warm I always intend to put together a welcome summer playlist and I never do, so I have nothing to refer to now. The two that come to mind are Train's "She's On Fire" and and Outkast's "I Like the Way You Move," but that's about it.

For me, the Outkast song is ideal on one of those rained out summer days, when it's muggy but comfortable and you can really enjoy the temperature. Awesome choices. Thanks for the heads up ::heads to iTunes::

I tend to go oldies when I'm thinking of summer songs-- "Rescue Me" Fontella Bass, "Hot Fun in the Summertime" Sly and the Family Stone, pretty much anything by the Beach Boys.

And as it's Canada Day weekend, the radio stations around here are going for the Canadian-play-it-at-your-cottage-over-a-case-of -Molson's Canadian-songs: there's "Summer of '69" by Brian Adams, "Patio Lanterns" by Kim Mitchell, "Life is a Highway" by Tom Cochrane. And of course, "Ahead by a Century" by my favorites, The Tragically Hip.

My favorite newer summer song is "Perfect" by Danny Michel.

*grin* I was thinking of the Sly song, but couldn't remember the artist (and was too lazy to start up the Google-Fu). If I listen to that when it's actually steaming outside and I'm stuck in the heat? Complete torture. :)

And when I hear "Summer of 69" I can't help but think about...well, this. (http://www.cracked.com/article_16442_6-famous-songs-that-dont-mean-what-you-think.html) Great choices, though. ::heads to iTunes::

Ooh, "Summer of '69" is a good one. I didn't realize Canada Day was so close to US Independence Day.

Two of my personal favorites are "Boys of Summer" by The Ataris and "Summer of 69" by Bryan Adams.

from the aged queen of the obscure on your flist...

game theory's big shot chronicles is great synthpoppy goodness that makes me think of a boy in love with beauty on a hot summer day. if i had to choose, i'd say the songs "crash into june" and "i've tried subtlety" would really hit the spot. unfortuantely, this album is way out of print. if you so desire, i can hook you up.

a less-obscure track you might want to hear is "fifty years after the fair" by aimee mann, which is melodic and melancholy and will stick in your head for hours.

ennio morricone's music always strikes me as summery, particularly his spaghetti western tunes, and belly's king is good for singalongs on the way back from the beach.
