fredericks: (Coffee?)

Working for the weekend again, even if we are currently on the tail end of one. Things haven't even been that bad lately, just the unpredictability of the work days get me slightly anxious. Still STILL better than working in the hospital, though; let's not even go there.

I finished a book (! I KNOW!) this weekend. I'd picked up the first book in Jim Butcher's Codex Alera, Furies of Calderon a while back and started it about a week ago. It grew on me rather quickly and I finished it a couple of days back, then went to get the second book yesterday. It's not like there's anything particularly novel about the writing, but I find the protagonist (Tavi) to be intriguing...and I keep waiting for him to magick up some furies. Books 3-5 are on order and should arrive along with the newest Dresden File book sometime this week.

To close this out, a meme. I answer the Five Random Questions posed to me by [livejournal.com profile] army_kitten, attempting to rein in my long-winded ways. If you'd like me to ask five questions of you just comment below. Be warned: if you ask me for questions you're obligated to reply and/or post the answers in your journal. Or the Ninja Lemurs of Death TM will make a surprise visit. Of death. So, you know, be wise.

1. so far in your life, how many places have you lived (this could be cities or apartments, depending on how you want to answer)? what was your favorite? your least favorite?
Only with the 'rents in NYC at various Queens locales and at college in Providence. I don't think I have a least favorite, but needless to say I enjoyed my time living in Providence. More the freedom than the actual area, although Providence had that "small urban city that wants to play with the big dogs" thing going on, what with picturesque places and sorta open-minded populace (up on College Hill, at least; then again, they did have an openly gay major and flew tons of rainbow flags downtown and around City Hall, which I thought completely rocked socks).

2. who was your first crush?
*snort* One of my cousins (M., I swear this isn't a shout-out). Back when I was younger we'd visit periodically and I was completely taken by his tall, dorky, glasses-wearing looks. The tall nerdy types remain a weakness to this day. I mean, Jesus, even the boy's name screamed stereotypical nerd. The crush only really died when I realized he didn't give a shit about doing schoolwork.

3. do you have any comfort foods?
A cup of tea and some sort of carb. So, let's say, a cup of Earl Grey with two tsp of sugar and a big dollop of milk (yeah yeah sacrilege-cakes, I march to the beat of my own synth) along with toasted HardDough bread and butter. Or camomile and mint with honey and some Ritz crackers. There's something about the texture of the bread with the warm liquid that I enjoy when shit's hit the fan.

4. what other countries have you visited?
I went to Italy during high school, stopping through Switzerland en route. I'd love to go again to revisit the sites (saw the Leaning Tower, Vatican City, the Colosseum, parts of Rome, Florence...sitting through an Easter Mass in Latin in a massive centuries old cathedral? completely awesome) and to see Venice. Have been to Trinidad two or three times. My memories of my stay? not so nice. But there were a couple of nice beaches here and there. On my cruise went to Jamaica, Cayman Islands, and Mexico. I really liked the Cayman Islands and the ruins in Mexico. The part of Jamaica the ship landed in was waaaaay too blatantly tourist-y for me. Sadly, I have not been to Canada. I feel that's the next country I'll make it my business to see. For the sake of international relations.

5. you read a lot of fanfic, but do you ever write it? if not, do you want to?
I don't write fanfic. I've started a couple of things here and there, but I have absolutely no confidence in what I put to paper. Funny enough, the first bit of serious writing I ever started was when I was ten or eleven and decided to write some (in hindsight) hilariously Mary Sue-ish Dragonlance fanfic. I was dead set on inserting this wonderfully powerful (*ahem*) female character into the world of Caramon's three sons so they could go on this completely gnarly adventure. I recall writing and writing for a couple of days (sadly there was no beta reader) and then rushing downstairs one day to show this amazing bit of cutting edge Y.A. fiction to my favorite uncle (even at that age I knew my parents weren't the best audience for any of my creativity). I gave him the spiral notebook and hopped from one foot to the other, anxious for him to read it and tell me what he though. And...he brushed it aside. I mean, I have no doubt it was an utter piece of crap, but I do recall (*ahem*) that it really hurt. This is not to say that my lack of creativity can be traced back to a single event nearly twenty years in the past, but just that I have a lack of trust in my own ability. Many ideas, but I'm still working on putting them out there.

I love Butcher's Dresden novels, so I've been waffling back and forth over whether I want to spend the money on the Codex novels. I keep looking for them in the used bookstores, but apparently no one wants to share theirs because I can't find a single one used. Are they worth my $7-8 new?

If you like Dresden Files you'll like Codex. Stylistically and thematically they're similar (chivalric actions from males, a protagonist who goes on about how he's not the fastest or strongest but does heroic deeds using logic, smarts, and "heart"). I figure head to the bookstore and read the first, say, 50 pages or so of the first novel. If you find yourself thinking "what next?", plunk down the cash.

Gah, this is tough. Let me see:
1. Classic Office Space question: you have a million dollars, what do you see yourself doing career-wise?
2. How do you think your mom's interactions/expectations of you would be different at this stage of your life if you were a male?
3. You're out and you're thirsty - what are you craving?
4. *grin* You've officially scoffed the Flavor-Aid: what are you cosplaying as and why?
5. Lips, hands, shoulders, or eyes?

Daniel likes the Codex Alera series, but he admits it's not great - and he loves really bad fantasy novels, anyway. I haven't been moved to read it yet, but maybe someday, if I'm bored - I'll have access to all of Daniel's books in a few months, anyway.

It's not bad, it just hasn't struck me as "ohmygawdsoGOOD", you know? Butcher is great at producing work (steady production, if you think about it: between Codex and Dresden the man's published at least 400 pages a year over the last seven or so years...look out, Danielle Steele!) that's interesting, if somewhat predictable. Which isn't a bad thing.

1. What's your earliest happy memory?
2. It's entertainment time: do you read the book? or watch the movie? and why.
3. What's your Death Row last meal consist of?
4. Who's your ideal Sunday afternoon brunchmate? Celebs, famous or non-famous folk past or present.
5. Favorite politico song?

Damn, now *I* want tea and crackers. The suggestion has the autonomic compulsive power of a yawn or something.
