I'm sitting here struggling through my homework with my PC wired through my stereo and the last two songs that have played strike me as ? non-traditional songs about love. The first song was Kelly Price's take on Shirley Murdock's classic "As We Lay", a song about the morning after an adulterous liasion. Lovely stuff about messing up a marriage. Next was Anita Baker's "Fairy Tales", about a relationship that was anything but. Going through my playlist the only other song I find that sort of fits the criteria is The Toadies "Possum Kingdom", because that's just really screwed up. Oh, and AFI's "Silver and Cold" - vampire love song!

Anyone know any interesting non-traditional love songs they want to share? And no, Weird Al's "You Don't Love Me Anymore" does not count.

Hmm...I think Radiohead's "Exit Music for a Film" might fit. It is about two lovers attempting to run from robots and getting killed, after all.

Originally 'Exit Music for a Film' was going to be on the Romeo and Juliet soundtrack...but they said it was 'too dark'. Shame really.

erm, non-traditional love music? How about 'Manchild' by the Eels? Sorta a traditional love song, but it seems to me to be a man going 'I love you' to a woman who just ain't interested....like he's too nice and too loving, just not fun.

Bleh, that's all I gots.

*grin* "Exit Music" IS dark! It's part of the reason why I like it. I can see it working on the end credits, but I guess they wanted the audience to leave happy - "oh, they've both died but it's okay! let's blast happy rock music!"

Manchild is interesting. I hadn't heard of the band or the song before.
And every time you crave for me i'm here
And anything you hunger for i'll share
And i will be quietly standing by
While slowly i am dying inside

Hold me in your arms
And let me be the one
Who can feel like i am a child in love

Every time i talk to you you're down
And every time you need a laugh i'm around
And when you forget i'm here i'm not
It isn't really me that you forgot

Hold me in your arms
And let me be the one
Who can feel like i am a child in love

Whisper now and tell me how
You'll watch me and tell me
Somehow i'm gonna be alright

That's it, right? Unrequited love, huh? Sucks.

Ech, it's not that non-traditional (the lyrics don't have the voice over of the women complaining about being bored and 'over this'), but it's what I was listening to and I'm lazy. So lazy.

Love is all (apples)

"And so it's you
I might as well
You're all I've got
So what the hell.
But if you want
To hold me dear
stop talking horse-shit
in my ear.
Cuz love is all..."

Oh boy, I could name a list........but I'll leave it at 3.

Tori Amos - Honey (actually tori has many, many non-traditional love songs ;-p)
Devotcka - How It Ends
Regina Spektor - Ode to Divorce

Oh, Honey's a straight-up sexin' song...full of that lyrical crack only Tori can do - "tuna robber/little blubber in my igloo" anyone? My favorite non-traditional Tori love song has to be "Leather". I can't believe I didn't mention it in my post. And "China" has to be one of the saddest "we're going to break up soon" song around.

"Ode to Divorce". Ah, love the title. *grin*

You might like Regina if you haven't heard her music.......she's sorta like a cross between Tori, Bjork, and Fiona Apple. (she's the beauty in the icon)

:-D

I'm passing by the library today. I'll see if they have her album up on the shelves. Coolness. :)

I'm big on the not-love songs. Fiona Apple has quite a few good ones-- "Not about love," "Sleep to Dream," "Paper Bag" just off the top of my head. Last year for Christmas I made one of my friends a mix cd with a stalker theme to it. I'm sure pretty much every song on that would fit this theme. I should try and find the tracklist for you...

"Sleep to Dream" - I completely forgot about that one. With Fiona's voice and delivery even her traditional love songs sound like non-traditional ones, though. :)

If you can find it, the track listing would be very welcome.

being stupid today, how do you class a non-traditional love song?

Date: 2006-03-26 03:54 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] fredericks.livejournal.com
To me it's anything that's not similar to "I Will Always Love You". Songs about stalking, songs about f'd up unrequited love relationships, songs about supernatural messed up love. I'm pretty loose with the description. Chances are if you think of the song when you think of someone you really really love it's not what I'd call a non-traditional love song. Unless you're a freak, in which case okay.

Well, I'm a freak, so....

There's probably quite a few of them in the lighter songs I listen to [when not listening to metal], that are about relationships in some shape or form.
Probably a few in Lene Marlin's songs, I guess...

never thought about it before
Just close your eyes and ignore
The dark that troubles you most
Don't let it be here

And if you see it again
Hold your breath and pretend
That you're already dead
You'll never be alone

I will always hold your hand, I'll never let you fall
'Cause nothing, nothing else matters at all
If you're scared, just think of me, 'cause you know I'd never let you be
Anywhere but with me

Forget the story you heard
Why are you worried about the dirt?
I don't think that you'll mind
When it's your time

'Cause I will be there with you
And we'll figure out what to do
So that you don't get bored
You'll never be alone

I will always hold your hand, I'll never let you fall
'Cause nothing, nothing else matters at all
If you're scared, just think of me, 'cause you know I'd never let you be
Anywhere but with me

So try to sleep with a smile
Promise I'll wait a while
To make sure that you moved on
You won't be lost

I will always hold your hand, I'll never let you fall
'Cause nothing, nothing else matters at all
If you're scared, just think of me, 'cause you know I'd never let you be
Anywhere but with me

See, that's sweet. Well, at least I believe it's sweet. What makes it non-traditional, besides the fact that I can imagine it being sung along to rock or new metal music? It doesn't seem particularly stalkish, even with the last bit of the refrain being "'cause you know I'd never let you be/anywhere but with me".
