There comes a point in time when the light from your birthday candles is more apt to be described as a blaze than a soft glow. I've reached that point. Joy.

I can't believe I've managed to stay alive for 26 years (and sincere thanks to all you kind people who sent me greetings and hopes for many more; I'm right there with y'all). I try to be all optimistic about it but half full isn't my bag. Still at home, still unemployed, still in school, still dependent on my folks. But, hey!, health and all that jazz.

To stave off the blues I buy stuff, and so today after class I spent time in Midtown Comics and in Virgin Megastore. Bought some Lucifer GNs and the first two Battle Royale manga and a bunch of CDs (Dresden Dolls, new AFI, complete Oboe and Recorder works of Vivaldi, Danger Doom, a couple of others I forget). Then home for cake and the traditional singing of the song with the fam. I felt plenty insecure and more than a little shitty prior thanks to a guest my mom brought home. Longish story and my champagne-addled brain isn't cooperating so I can plaster it here. Suffice to say me = blah. But the day's almost done and then I can go back to feeling "meh". Marked improvement.

ETA - Forgot to mention this. Mom came in to check out my bag o' goodies. When she got to the Lucifer GNs she paused for a moment and made her face. It's specific to her, of course, but it's easily recognizable as the universal mom "wtf" face. Then she looked at me and said "Lucifer...you're not into that devil thing, are you?" I eye-rolled and told her that was right up there with saying people who read Harry Potter are witches and devil worshippers. Then she told me she informed a co-worker I was listening to OotP on CD and the co-worker wondered aloud if I was, in fact, a follower of Satan. My mind, it be boggled.

You're a Lucifer fan too, eh? I don't like it quite as much as Sandman, but Gaiman's Lucifer was an interesting character and I like the way Carey's managed to keep him intriguing. Not too hot with the seeming infallibility of the character, but there are others around him to keep me coming back for more.

You are right not as good as Sandman but then there isn't much that I can say I like more than Sandman besides maybe Transmetroplis by Warren Ellis! I've read the first two of Lucifer a while ago, but it hasn't made my collection yet. I really liked Book of Magic but the ones after in the series kinda fizzled. I have to replace the Books of Faerie I lent them out to my ex best friend and never got them back after we had a falling out! What can I say I'm a huge gaiman fan. I also want Black Orchid! Now I want to head to the comic store. :-D
