Great Aunt V. has died after a relatively short but brutal cancer fight, and the funeral's in FL on Tuesday. If this was one of my grandparents money'd be no object, but spending $600+ dollars to go down for the viewing and burial seems a bit much. However, it's encouraging to know that I'd get the days off from work no questions asked. I'm horrible at funerals; all the emotion involved from folks I usually spend time avoiding makes me antsy. Not really sure whether I should buck up and eat the cost or not.
My father's a case of early Alzheimer's waiting to happen. With his history of seizures and cerebral aneurysms I won't be surprised if things are worse than he currently lets on. As it is, half the time he's short towards us is because he's either forgotten something or cannot understand what we're saying to him. It's a terrifying fate, and I hope I'm completely off base. *sigh*
Yeah, life rocks. Time for bed.

Date: 2009-10-24 01:59 am (UTC)Things are going down in Palm Bay. Mom's already taking flax because she wants to stay in a hotel instead of dealing with the crazy relatives (no one wants to stay in the room my greataunt died in, and I don't blame them at all). Funerals are for the family and friends to get together anyway, and our family is somewhat avoidy as it is, so to come together over a death is just a timebomb waiting to happen.
I like your idea. Party funeral sounds like the way to go. And, planning for your parent is quite tough. Oy. One day at a time. *hugs* right back at you.
